Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone 🙂 my names Lucy, I found this site by the diabetes.co.uk page... I am completely new to diabetes and after having numerous blood, urine tests (which are still ongoing) I was finally diagnosed last week with type 2 diabetes. However I am struggling to come to terms with it, last week I had to have a cholesterol blood test and urine sample, then I have another letter come through saying I have to have my eyes tested and yesterday to top it all off I have to take more time off work to go back to my doctors for 2 more urine samples - this is worrying me a lot as I have only just done this :( The thing I struggle with the most is the diet and exercise, it's just all happening at once and I'm finding it very overwhelming... Aside from that I would love to hear from other people, many thanx for reading my post 🙂

Hi Lucy.

I hope you can trust some of the good folk on here. You can ask any question that comes to mind and someone will be sure to know an answer.

I won't try to advise you, as I'm type 1, but someone else will I'm sure. 🙂

Rob

Hi Lucy and a warm welcome to the site hun, sorry to hear how your feeling it is not uncommon and at first it all seems so daunting, really it does get better and now you are a member of this forum you have made a good move, you will find we are such a supportive, firendly bunch so anything you need or if we can help in any just say....

Regarding diet and exercise what do you enjoy? i do swimming twice a week and i roll around on a gym ball for 20 minutes lol, but if you can find something yuo enjoy doing for about 30 minutes a day it will make a diffirence, where diet is concerned theres no need to take the drastic measure of cutting everything out totally, the key with type 2 is moderationm they is no reason why a type 2 can not live a healthy diet if you just stick a good balance.
I would reccommend a book by Gretchen Becker called type 2 diabetes-the first year it is really great and many of us have found it such a good source of info and help here is the link http://www.amazon.co.uk/Type-Diabet...8048/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1287080426&sr=8-1.

Hi Lucy, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, it can all seem very daunting to begin with. I was like you when I was diagnosed as I've only had to visit the doctor once in a blue moon beforehand ans suddenly it was like I was never away!

Try not to do everything at once. I'd recommend you have a look at the 'Useful Links at the top of the Newbies section and look at the Type 2 links provided. Particularly useful is the book by Gretchen Becker which will help to put things in perspective and help you learn what to expect and plan for. For ideas on diet, have a look at the GL Diet books recommended for an idea of where to start.

If you have any questions, please ask and we'll do our best to help - nothing is 'silly' so don't be shy! 🙂

Welcome to the forum Lucy.

It is daunting to start with, but with a bit of luck, things may not be as bad as they may seem right now.

I'm three days away from my 1 year anniversary of my diagnosis and can honestly say that I am now healthier, fitter and happier than at any time in the previous ten years. My type 2 diabetes was just the trigger I needed to put myself on a better track health-wise.

But as Northey said, take it one step at a time, and take heart from the fact that there are many people who successfully control their diabetes rather than the other way around.

Andy 🙂

hi

Hi Lucy, Welcome, and try not to worry, i was diagnosed in March and its a lot to take in, i'm still getting there, but I have had so much help off here, the eye tests not bad and routine with newbies, ask lots of questions at the doctors and on here, best of luck x

Hi Lucy and welcome to the site. It is a great site and the people are so supportive and helpful it will be a great help to you in the coming weeks.

I know exactly how you are feeling at the moment as I was only diagnosed just over 3 weeks ago. You will go through every emotion in the coming weeks anger, frustration, scared to name but I few. I have been following a weight watcher type diet since diagnosis and have managed to loose just over a stone which has made a huge difference to my BG level I started off at 23.5 and have managed to get it a lot lower than that average between 10 - 15 still a long way to go but defintely going in the right direction in a short space of time. As for the exercise what I try to do is just go for a 30 minute walk each day or 20-30 mins on the exercise bike I have just treat myself to. The exercise does seem to make a huge difference to your weight loss and BG levels................shame I had to develop Diabetes 2 before I realised that.

In the coming weeks I have got appointments to get my feet checked, eyes tested and will also be attending a 2 half day course to learn more about diabetes and how to cope with it. All scary stuff but I know the members(who I feel are already more like friends on this site) will help me through the comming weeks🙂

The book that Steffie and Northerner have recommended is really good an explains everything really well.

Hi Lucy and well done for finding the forum where you will get all the support of help you need to get to grips with your new lifestyle🙂

In time I hope you come to look on all the tests and checkups as getting yourself serviced, like a car - all you need to keep you running smoothly😉

Hi Lucy and well done for finding this site so quickly. It took me 4 years and I wish I had been able to access the very useful information earlier. Take a deep breath and gradually take on board all the information here.

Hi all, many thanx for the warm lovely welcome, I will definately check out the book, it's been nice to hear from other fellow diabetes peeps, and about how everyone is coping. 2moro I start my diet, I'm going to try to get back into using the exercise bike as I had worked my way up to 1hr, but it all went to pot and I've put my weight back on. It's going to be a fresh start! 🙂

Hi Sheilagh1958, many thanx for your reply, I definately can relate to this, I too have to be tested for my feet and also I remember the nurse mentioning something about a course, but I couldn't quite take it all in at the time - I'm going to do that in one day as I can't keep taking time off work 🙂 2moro I have to go and have my eyes tested, my mum tells me not to worry as she had to have it done, apparently they just put dye in the eyes. The thing that gets me is how much time I'm having to have off work, (which is being taken unpaid), luckily I can at the moment make my hours up, but it's just so frustrating. Will let you all know how it goes, and hey we'll all get through this together 🙂

Hey and welcome to the forum!! This really is a fantastic site and I wish i'd found it a hell of a lot earlier!! I found out I was diabetic in 2004 and I only found it last week!! There's a wealth of information ... knowledge and humour on here ... so wether you're after something diabetic related or just a little chat about something else there's somewhere to put it up on the forums!! Good luck with the tests that are ongoing at the moment!! XxXxX

hi Lucy
Depending on your employer you may be able ask for adjustment leave, i got some to attend appointments etc, and it was paid leave, it may be worth asking your personnel dept if you have one,

hi lucy, i'm in the exact same position as yourself, newly diagnosed and confused, but reading the posts on here there are a lot of us about ...

I know what you mean having time off work. I have gone from being never being at the doctors to going for this test and that test. Fortunately I have managed to get an evening appointment for my eye test on the 9th November and also the course is over two evenings as well. I am quite lucky and get time off work for doctors appointments (and paid) but don't want to take to much time off work......to be honest I have only told one of the girls from work at the moment that I have got Diabetes I need to get use to the idea myself before I start telly work colleagues. Had my feet done last week and everything went okay thank goodness.

How are you coping with it so far?

I have just treat myself to an exercise bike and have managed to do half an hour now need to increase and get to an hour. Diet is going well so far (well most of the time)!!
