Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I was basically put on metaformin and told I have type 2 diabetes around 2 weeks ago, with no info, except watch my diet and excercise from the doctor when I finally received my annual blood test results after waiting 4 weeks for results with cancelled appointments galore.
I'm 51yrs old and 5'7 and 75kg. Obviously the alcohol and sugary night snacks is a cause. Going to cut all that out, already cut out sugar from brews and drinking water instead sometimes (easier said than done I know). Problem is what do I eat? Usually have 2 weetabix for breakfast( any other suggestions?) and then a tin of tuna with half pack of uncle bens rice or a few rivitas with benecol for my dinner on workdays. Am I doing it all wrong.?
Whats best time to eat if I wake at 6.45 ish?
Dinner is 12.30 till 1.15
What time should T time be?
Any info really appreciated till I learn more. Obviously I know I have to add more veg to the diet and start the exercising again. Can I take protein shakes and get back to lifting weights? Do I need sugar intake or just from my food
Any help appreciated thanks

Welcome to the forum
How much you need to do will depend on how high your HbA1C is that has given you your diagnosis but I assume it was quite high if you have been prescribed metformin, it is a medication which helps the body use the insulin it produces more effectively at metabolising carbohydrates but it can only do so much so it is essential to reduce your intake of carbohydrates. It is all carbohydrates that convert to glucose of which sugar is one. A healthy balanced diet with plenty of protein and healthy fats but limiting carbohydrates to no more than 130g per day is a suggested regime.
When you eat is up to you it is much more what you eat, having filling meals rather than in between meal snacks is better.
Have a look at this link as there is good explanation and some meal plans to give you some ideas and you will realise there is plent you can eat.

Welcome to the forum @Magico1234

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, and it sound a bit like you’ve just been sent off without much in the way of support or information :(

You might like to register an account with the Learning Zone (the orange tab in the main menu), which is packed with bite-sized modules which you can work through to give you a good overview of T2 diabetes.

You might also find this downloadable e-book from Diabetes UK called Enjoy Food helpful - it covers a lot of the basics. Everyone’s ideal diabetes-friendly menu will be different. There isn’t a simple one-size-fits-all list that works for everyone. You have to work it out for yourself as you go along. “Everything in moderation”, except laughter as Alan S used to say.
