hannah my 5 year old has just been dignosed with type 1 diabetes. she is complaining of midge bites but not sure if i can give pirtion. or calpul. what do you think.

I don't know enough so wouldn't like to comment but ask a pharmacist. They are bound to know.

try nhs direct

Hi Hannah

There may be other reasons apart from diabetes to take into account, so we can't really say yes or no.

But sound advice from KateR and Gail.🙂

Hope she doesn't suffer too much. We got plagued by them on holiday.:(

Have you tried something fairly inert like calamine ?

Rob

Hi Hannah best people you can ask are the professionals so ring NHS direct I would hate for one of us to give you advice and it be wrong, let us know how she is .

Hi, Just check with the pharmasist, they know all drug interactions etc. Calpol comes in sugar free. Piriton full of sugar but they do a sugar free version for over 6 yrs.

Hi .

Check with the pharmacist on the piriton, but I think it comes in a sugar free version.

I do know there is a citronella based lotion that you can put on the skin that should deter the midges.

Also if the bits a really itchy, try dabbing them with calomine lotion

Heidi
xx🙂

You should be ok with Calpol, just be careful to follow the instructions on the label (everyone should do that, diabetes or no). The piriton is a bit more of a trouble, i'km sure it's ok to give people with diabetes but i'm not sure about five year olds. Ask at your local pharmacy they'll know, or at least have a BNF C to hand. It's probably ok, but i'm not 100% sure. If you want to use something perfectly safe i's recommend calomine lotion or ointment, that's soothing and cooling when you apply it to bites and make them less itichy, my parents swore by it when we were kids. My brother still has horrible problems with midge and mosquito bites. You could also, by the same token, try menthol in aqueous cream, but you might not want your child to smell like cough mixture! Hehehe, i quite like the smell myself.

Check with the pharmacist, although calpol comes in s sugar free version, as do many medicines for children these days. As it is insect bites you might be better off with an anti histamine cream, but the pharmacist will bebest placed to advise

How is your little one now? I hope you were able to get something that will help with the bites.

I looked it up at work, you should be fine to give piriton
