Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hi to everyone, hoping I can get some support. I was diagnosed back in January with Vit B12 deficiency. Had another blood test and was told I have Coeliac Desease and was also pre diabetic my level was 42. I have bought a Blood Glucose Monitoring System and my readings were 4.9 about 2 hours after breakfast and then 6.5 just after lunch. I don't know if these numbers are high or low or what they should be. Would any other medication affect any readings? Would be very grateful for any help.

Mrs Cam

Hi @mrscam - there Is some general information about target levels on the DUK website:
but more or less anything between 4-7 is what you’re aiming for, although that is given as the target for someone with diabetes, if you are getting those results with no treatment then that looks good. You might find it helpful to have a look at the learning zone (link at the top of the page) for ideas of any changes you might need to make to your diet or lifestyle. In relation to other medications, the patient information leaflet should detail if hyperglycaemia is a side effect. How are you finding the dietary changes for managing Coeliac disease? Is the B12 deficiency due to that?

Welcome to the forum @mrscam

Sorry to hear about your prediabetes and coeliac diagnosis.

Good news that your BG results seem to be within the normal range so far.

It might be a helpful tactic to begin keeping a food diary. Particularly if you also check your BG just before and then again 2 hours after a meal. that way you can begin to get an understanding of which meals raise your BG levels dramatically and quickly, and which seem to give a smaller, gentler rise. Then you can adjust your diet to make it nutritious, enjoyable, coeliac-friendly and BG-friendly 🙂

In the main for diabetes it is the carbohydrates that will have the largest effect. Not just sweet and sugary things, but all carbohydrates including cereals, grains, rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, bakery items and most fruits (berries seem to be the better option).

Good readings. Would the 6.5 be 2 hours after again.
In face, 4.9 could be considered on the lower side, considering it's after breakfast. (Breakfast being a particular issue for some people.)

Not sure if the B12 deficiency was due CD. I am waiting for an appointment to have an endoscopy but with Corona Virus I guess I will have to wait longer. The dietary changes has not been to bad, being very careful and reading the labels and of course learning from people over the internet. The problem I still have is a very bloated stomach and I'm wondering if it will ever go down.

6.5 was straight after lunch
