I found that the rise depended on my pre meal reading.
If I was 4, I could see an 8 and still be reasonably happy.
Depending on circumstances, if I started eating at an 8, I tried to keep the rise as low as possible.
Even now, I'm not too fussed about the rise, so long as I stay in the none diabetic end zone, and rarely test before meals anymore.

That’s certainly one approach - to aim for 4-8.5 overall.

But in the early days, I think it can also be helpful for newbies to know that a meal that was 10.2 before and 11.4 at 2hrs actually suited their metabolism really well in some respects. Neither number is ideal, but the meal itself was tolerated well. If they can
keep the rises fairly modest, their BG levels can coast down into range more gradually as the upward ‘bumps’ are less exaggerated.

But yes, once folks are down into range fairly consistently there’s not much to worry about with some slightly bigger rises from a lower start 🙂
