Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Well was diagonised as having type 2 Diabetes last week. Been in to see the Diabetes specialist at my local health care centre today. Which I have to say has given me great service.

Been proscibed Metfromin, and I'm little worried about what I should be aware of whilst taking it. Quite daunting to feel that I may need to take medication for the rest of my life. It's also a little frighting that I need to go to the local hospital to have my eyes checked.

Although it isn't all bad news, seems that liver, kidneys and my blood pressure are fine, an my choelstrol <sp> is not too bad. So some postives to take from the diagonises.

I am trying hard to put a postive outlook on it. My lifestyle so fars not been the healthist. Lot of red-meat, lot of full fat diary foods, not a lot of exercise and plenty of smoking. So maybe a change of lifestyles going to be a good thing for me. It's all a little daunting at the moment though🙂.

Anyways sorry about rambling on.

hi and welcome to the site berti like you im t2 have been for 8 month now and im on metformin im pleased where you have been today has been alot of help, this place is full of good people all diffirent ages and backgroud just have a browse around and ask anything anytime x

Hello and welcome to the forum.:D

Your in the right place for a rant and some advice etc - we are all nice and will help you if we can.🙂Bev

Hi Berte. I'm T2 too, diagnosed 5 weeks ago. It's taking some getting used to but I've found that the folk in here are a great source of info and support. You're in the right place.

Berte, welcome to the forum🙂 Sounds like there are already some positives - getting good numbers and resluts on the BP, liver and kidneys is excellent news, and it sounds like you are working up some determination to modify your lifestyle foe the better. Don't worry too much about the eye test, it is standard for all diabetics these days and you should get a check every 6 months to a year.

It can be a lot of hard work to start with, getting used to a healthier diet and lifestyle, but eventually you will begin to feel better and reap the rewards, just take things slowly and don't feel you need to change everything overnight. Start with the simple things and take it from there. I wish you the best, please post any questions or concerns you may have and we'll do outr best to answer them🙂

Thanks for the words of support. I've spent sometime, just reading other peoples hello threads an just knowing that other people are able to cope, and to keep this condition manageable is helpful.

I am trying to be stoic about the diagnoises. In the sense that it is happening to me, that I will need to make some lifestyle choice that are hard. I'm trying not to dewle too much on the why it's happened, but on the steps I need to make to improve it.

As most of the males on my father side have died of heart diease some before they were 50, then a change in lifestyle for me, has got to be more of a postive than negeitive. Angry at myself that It took this for me to reconginise the fact.

Agian thanks for the word of the words of support. Already glad I took the time to look for some support. You all may not be so glad I did when I try to quite smoking🙂

Haha! I know the feeling, my friend! Can I recommend a book called 'The Easy Way to Stop Smoking' by Allen Carr? That worked for me, and I know it has worked for many others. Just enjoy being really ratty for a couple of weeks - others might not enjoy it, but it is the single best thing you can do for your health right now. Along with many other benefits that no doubt you are fully aware of, stopping smoking will actually help to improve your blood sugar levels. If you ever need any words of encouragement, you'll find lots of support here!🙂

Hi Berte, welcome to the forum, it's a great first step to take!!

Making lifestyle changes is certainly not easy, but is the only way forward!! As Northerner says, one step at a time, you don't have to do everything at once.

Everyone here is happy to answer any questions you may have, and remember that anything that you're not sure about, others will probably be wondering the same thing as well, so never be afraid to ask!

xx

Hi Berte,

From what you have said so far you don't sound to be too far down the diabetic pathway. Cutting back on starchy carbohydrates - e.g. cereals, bread, potatoes, pasta, rice etc - usually makes a big improvement to the blood glucose levels of Type 2s. Have you tried that?

You are likely to find that diet is very powerful in dealing with your condition - more powerful than the tablets or exercise. However, both of these will help too.

Best wishes - John
