hey im doodle have a boyfriend with type 2 diabetes so just wanting to learn as much about it as possible and if anyone knows of any organisations that help people that live with diabetes sufferers thnx

Hello Doodle, welcome. There are quite a few carers (mostly mums of T1s, but a few other 'arves as well).

Hi Doodle, welcome to the forum 🙂 Has your boyfriend been diagnosed long? Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and we will hopefully be able to answer them for you. I'm not personally aware of any organisations specifically for partners/carers of people with diabetes, but you're more than welcome to join in here wherever you wish. If you'd like to learn about Type 2 and approaches to achieving good blood sugar control, I would suggest getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, as it is a very good introduction 🙂

aw thanks lee lee mate im currently doing the diabetes uk test phew lots to learn but ill get their think due to the hot weather in uk at the moment my other arf is having a few hypos just want to be more aware i guess

my boyfriends had it all his life but i just feel for my own peace of mind that i should research and learn as much about it so if something happens i am aware of what to do i had a scare recently when he had a hypo and didnt have any lucozade in the house so phoned paramedics but after that i just felt i need to learn more also today we were out trying to get gluco gel and its really difficult to find it we went to half a dozen pharmacies and they didnt have any

Just a bit confused Doodle - from what you say it sounds like he is Type 1 rather than Type 2? Type 2 tends to be diagnosed in adulthood, but if he has had diabetes since childhood then it's much more likely to be Type 1. In which case, scrub my previous advice about the Type 2 book - you need to get a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas, also called the 'Type 1 bible' 🙂

For hypos, most 'fast' sugar items will do, it doesn't have to be glucogel - it tastes horrid and as far as I know doesn't have any special advantages over proper fruit juice, jelly babies, full sugar coke etc.

yeah youre right

yeah youre right type 1 soz that was a typo i think as it was my first experience of a proper full blown hypo i just got scared hes had one since and i coped with it much better the reason i wanted the gel is its a lot easier to rub it on his gums rather than trying to make him eat or drink when hes semi concious or non responsive but he did tell me it tastes horrible

It can be scary, but it's good that you want to learn so you can help him 🙂 In order to save confusion, I've changed your profile to 'Carer/None' so other people responding don't think it is you that has the diabetes 🙂
