Relationship to Diabetes

Hey I'm Dan I've had diabetes since I was 3 and a half (So I've now had it for 9 years) I've also recently been diagnosed with coeliac due to my annual blood tests. As I'm 12 I have had to start having eye screening every year which I really don't like! So I suppose the reason I've joined this forum is because I have recently been getting fed up with my diabetes and just last night forgot to do my Lantus so now don't feel to good today.

Hi Dan, welcome to the forum 🙂 At least the eye screening is only once a year, so not too bad. Sorry to hear about the coeliac, that often goes together with diabetes - hope you still manage to find good things to eat - it can't be easy having to juggle both conditions. What is it that is making you fed up with your diabetes? I often think it is better to just give it those few minutes each day and get on with your life, rather than letting it bother you or make you feel guilty for 'neglecting' it, which can take up much more of your day. Have you spoken to your parents or nurse about it? Do you count carbs? Let us know if you have any questions. 🙂

Dan hi and a warm welcome to the forum

Yeah it is getting better with the coeliac and I've found loads to eat, we have even found a fish and chip shop that on the last Sunday of every month do a gluten free fish and chips! We are going with my grandparents today.

The thing that is making me fed up is that if I forget something like an injection before bed (not that it happens often!) it makes me feel ill. The feeling of a hypo is also something that I don't like particularly if it happens at school.
I have spoken to my parents about it and they understand.
Luckily it is not that often that I get fed-up about it though and one of my friends at school has also just become diabetic.

And yes I have been counting carbs for a while now and love it!

Hello Dan,
a very big welcome to the forum.
Diabetes can be a real pain in the bum at times 😡 Have you tried having an alarm clock or a watch with an alarm on it to remind you to do your lantus.
I wouldn't recomend using big Ben though 😛

I found this recipe and can say it is double yummy.
http://www.food.com/recipeprint.do?rid=147237 perhaps ask your Mum to make you some or have a go yourself 🙂 Just make sure you mix the splenda very well or you will have a bitter taste and small biscuits.

That is a really good idea to use an alarm clock and I had not thought of that!

That recipe for almond biscuit's really does look nice so thank you!:D
I'm sure we will be making them!

Hey to you Dan! Like your car by the way.

There are squillions of 'almond flour' recipes mum (and you!) can make here

http://www.diabetes-support.org.uk/forum/Blah.pl?c-800/

and here

http://79.170.42.2/diabetes-support.org.uk/diabetesforum/ - just scroll down to the recipe sections.

Tell mum Aldi are about the cheapest for ground almonds at the moment.

What do you do when you wake up next day, feel orrible, test and realise you've forgotten to do your Lantus? take half of it there and then, or what? (and we've all done it from time to time - so don't get thinking it's only you!)

If you haven't already got a way of dealing with it - ring your Nurse up and ask them. They won't tell you off, so don't worry about that. What time d'you go to bed - just wondering if it corresponds with say - mum & dad watching a certain TV prog or something? If so you could say - Remind me to do my Lantus when the News comes on please.

Do you talk to the other person at school? It's nice to have someone about the same age to talk to who understands - not so much the techinicalities of iit all, but just understands exactly what it's like anyway. And there's only another person with diabetes who DOES really understand what it's like. And that is exactly the same for all of us, whether we're 12 or 62 like me!

Welcome to the forums Dan 🙂

I tend to go to the toilet alot in the night and drink alot and then wake up in the morning feeling sick. This is when mum or dad says check your bg and we find out that I am high. After this we realise the mistake and because I have the accu-chek aviva expert meter it tells me how much novo rapid to do. We also then do half my Lantus dose in the morning.

The reason in particular last night was that I was watching Merlin with my dad whilst mum was upstairs and because I was tired I was told to go to bed quickly. Because of this it completely slipped my mind that I had not done my lantus.

And thanks for the recipes!

Welcome to you and your dad too - we have to set an alarm too -many a time we have nearly forgot the lantus - might have a go at those cookies over chrismas- wecome again

Hi Dan. Welcome. 🙂

You sound like an old hand at it all, with much the same problems as us slightly more mature members have. ie. forgetfullness and all that entails.🙄

The coeliacs must make things slightly mroe 'interesting' for you and your parents, but since it's their genes that you have, you can blame it all on them!:D

Hee hee - well that one, my lad - is a problem for your mum and dad to sort out - when they pack you off to bed in a hurry! LOL

Are you listening, Dad? Bet you are ......

In detention and 100 lines

Must remember to remind Dan to take his Lantus
Must remember to remind Dan to take his Lantus
Must remember .....

In your own handwriting, not cheating on 'Word' either! LOL

Yes I must say that the coeliac does make it slightly more difficult but we have found lot's of food that I like and even a gluten free fish and chip shop! I am going with my grandparents today!

And yeah I'm looking forward to the cookies!

Welcome to the forum Dan from another Dan!

It's a great place to learn, share and moan about all things diabetes, hope you find it a useful place. I can only imagine what it must be like to be 12 and have to deal with D, I found it a pain to get my head round at the age of 40, and certainly have days when I think I wish I could just forget about it for a day, but alas we can't if we want to keep on top of things!

Good luck, and I hope you enjoy the Gluten free fish and chips 🙂

hi welcome from me too ...my local fish and chip shop does gluten free batter aswell ...🙂

Hi Dan & welcome!

That chip shop sounds fab... 🙂

Diabetes can be a faff, I too was diagnosed as a young kid & despite the diabetes have still really enjoyed getting stuck into all sorts of things - the Duke of Edinburgh's award, loads of adventureous stuff with cadets & uni etc. I realise the coeliac thing adds another layer of complication, but I just wanted to say that with a bit more planning & some thought there's no reason you can't enjoy the same things as the rest of your mates...the kit's loads better & always improving too, which also helps! Plus there's loads of experience & good advice amongst us here on the forum, so it's a great place for help or ranting if need be!

Hope you enjoyed your fish & chips! 🙂
