Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi I've recently just found out about this message board even though its been 10 years since I was diagnosed with type 1. My doctor says I should be dead by now...but what does he know? 😛

Well those were the words of my GP and not my lovely diabetic consultant...

Well at the beginning of being diagnosed I went through a phase of denial which I didn't think so at the time!!! I left home for uni and ignored my health which was not good and developed ketoacidosis which left me ITU for 2 weeks. On top of this all, with a low immune system already I then got septiceamia (don't ask me how) and was put on a ventilator and was near to be put on dialysis. Bear in mind I was comotosed for 2 weeks so much of it was a blur to me. I was transferred to another hospital with a specialist liver unit as the previous hospital couldn't cope with me; and spent many more weeks recovering. They say I was lucky to be alive...and I think so too!!!

I'm still finding it hard to be the perfect diabetic my GP wants me to be...I always end up sobbing when I leave his office!

Goodness Vicky, glad you made it through! Hope things get much better for you🙂

That was a few years ago when I was a student..and now I have a sort of routine to my life, I do feel so much better and healthier, even if my GP doesn't think so.

Hey
I'm completely new to this so i'm not sure if i'm posting in the right place or not - apologies in advance! But i'm a type one diabetic as well, had it for just over four years and completely new to the site. So just thought i'd say hi. 🙂

Hi there eyeko, welcome to the group!🙂

Hey I'm hoping to get some good advice off here, I'm having a real problem with ketones at the moment.

Hey Eyeko....

Welcome...I've only been here a few days, but I'm learning and sharing so much already.

Ketones is not fun to have...other people could really tell the difference when I had them...my breath smelt sweet (some said it smelt like pear drops) which was a tell tell sign and my mood swings were bad!!! How are your managing your sugars?

I'm on insulin injections of novorapid and levermeer. I'm trying to get the sugars down by using correction doses but it hasn't helped for the past three days to be honest. Just rang up one of the diabetes nurses now and she has given me a new ratio to use for correction doses I'm just about to eat lunch and take an injection now so hopefully this should help. Thanks for the tip about mood swings because over the past three days I seem to of been swinging from really happy and giggly and giddy to absolutely crying my eyes out. Could be hormonal influences aswell but I'm wondering if the ketones have played a role too? Seen as these past three days I've had +3 ketones the whole time.
