Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Just wanted to say hi , my son is type 1 has been for 6 years hes 14 and on medtronic 640 were in process of getting new pump and he is going to try the insight ,weve been told it can be time consuming but he loves the idea of it , we live in the north east and the last time we were involved with diabetes UK was at parliament for the safeguarding kids in school

Good for you and your son Kezz! A well overdue victory for ALL differently abled kiddies as well as the ones with diabetes.

The Insight is different in that the BG meter is also the remote - and the fact they connect, so it's all good. OTOH certain aspects grate but I expect that's true with any pump - having to change the pump batter every 2 weeks is a bit of a nuisance (not ever so long after the 2 weeks the meter/remote loses communication with the pump sporadically and throws up an error telling you that it's because the display on the pump is switched on - but it isn't …..) but it does actually keep working so take the first time as a warning but change it asap after that.

I now have a timetable - the beginning of each month and the middle. Never exactly 14 days apart, but near enough. Changed it yesterday!

Roche are great - the order line and the Tech Help line.

Hi , hes had medtronic 640 and we were very lucky these last 4 years weve had no problems ,however we were advised that even though we wanted to go for the 670 medtronic are being a pain with supplies so were at a cross roads ,but kids being kids they love all the new technology, but with things I've read to be honest I'm starting to be a bit sceptical on the insight pump ,only due to us having no problems with the pump ,at the moment it's the new cannulas themselves ,leaking x

Hi @Kezz72, welcome to the forum 🙂 No pump advice from me I'm afraid, but I hope you find the forum helpful 🙂

I had a Roche Combo before my Insight so have had them for 9 years-ish and have never had a cannula problem except 2 bleeders - ie poured with blood when I removed em but had been perfectly fine whilst in use thus informing me the cannula must have gone straight through a thread vein and out the other side when I inserted it. I once folded over the inserter needle and cannula so it didn't actually go in me - but that was user error cos I just wasn't looking or concentrating, but I thought immediately Oh bugger, just pulled it straight off and started again.

On the one I've got apparently some people have had probs accidentally pressing buttons so they issued all of us with some bits of plastic to fit on the pump to prevent us doing it - but since I didn't even know my pump had a 'Quick Bolus' facility let alone set it up, I can hardly accidentally press the relevant buttons LOL Anyway - on the latest ones - the safety features are already there so won't affect your son.

No pump is completely idiot proof and whilst I'm not a complete technophobe I'm not exactly proficient either (kids whizz through things so quickly instead of doing it slowly and actually TEACHING their stone age Grandma how to do it - I've been left behind and anyway the text is so little on these phones you may as well forget it for me!) and I haven't managed to break it.
