Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone,
From what I have just read I am not the only one who is totally baffled after being diagnosed with type 2 a few yrs ago, have had my head in the sand I am afraid to admit but last winter decided enough was enough. So,tried to get help from surgery Diabetic nurse which was absolutely useless ,was told just cut out all carbs, sugar and that was it.I have managed to loose 2 and a half stones but, feel as though my diet is not healthy as not eating meat ,all I seem to be eating is fish and veg,I am totally baffled by counting carbs etc ,have read so many books my eyes hurt. All I have ever wanted is someone to tell me in basic english what I should be doing, not make me feel like I have lost the plot.
Just need some helpX
PS My hba was 48 and I am trying to get it under 41 X

Hi Sharon454, welcome to the forum.

So sorry to hear how stressful things have been of late but congrats on getting healthier!

One of the tricky things about diabetes is that there's no one size fits all approach though generally, people have found success by reducing their carb and sugar intake.

Having said that, it doesn't mean that you need to limit yourself, you just need to find alternatives that work for you.

It might be worth keeping a diary for a week to note down what you eat. You can then look back and make adjustments, based on the results of you blood sugar levels on average.

You're welcome to share your average meals with us if you'd like some input on how to improve.

I'm wondering about your last question too Anitram. Does make it tricky low carbing being vegan - because much of the protein needs to be sourced via pulses. But that's where a BG monitor and self testing before and after all food comes into its own to analyse exactly how much of which recipes each Type 2 vegan body can now cope with at this or that time of day!

Sharon mentions eating fish, so perhaps pescatarian rather than veggie or vegan? 🙂

Welcome to the forum @Sharon454

Not sure which books you’ve already read, and how much sense they have made, but members here frequently recommend Maggie Davey’s Letter and Gretchen Becker’s book T2 Diabetes, the first year, as very helpful starting points.

It sounds like you are doing brilliantly so far - 48 shows very effective diabetes management. Maybe keep a food diary for a couple of weeks to see if you can identify any particularly carby meals that might benefit from some tweaks and changes?

I wondered that myself - but how would that be boring? so many different types of fish, so many different ways of cooking them, each with their own different accompaniments you can serve them with - I mean you wouldn't want eg chips with a barbecued trout or new potatoes, peas and hollandaise sauce with cod in batter or smoked mackerel, would you? OTOH I confess I haven't actually tried those combinations and you shouldn't knock something you haven't tried! 🙂

Gotta love a fish curry too (and there are so many varieties!). Yum! 😛
