Hi just been diagnosed with type 2,finding it really really hard,I don't know what to eat and how much of it,does anyone know what are good carbs and how often should you have them,pleeeease help.
 
Hello and welcome to the forum. In the beginning everyone finds it really hard, but you learn as you go along. This is a great place to be and everyone has experience in one way or another. Please feel free to ask as many questions as you like and someone will help you.

The main thing is to eat a balanced diet, this includes some carbs. One of the things I do is substitute potatoes for an extra portion of veg. If you fancy a slice of cake or some biscuits it is best to have them as part of your meal, although the odd biscuit with a cuppa is nice so don't deprive yourself too much. Whole grains are better for you, but as we are all different it may take a little experimentation to work out what is right for you.

If you can get hold of a copy of Crabs & Cals it is a pretty good reference guide and shows portion sizes
 
Hi Caly, welcome to the forum. I'm sure you're overwhelmed by it all, but you're in the right place to ask any questions, and the carbs question is a good one to start with. The problem is that carbohydrates convert to glucose in the body very quickly and the resulting rise in blood sugar levels can be scary. In the early days certainly it's a good idea to try and reduce your carb intake by eating fewer things such as bread, potatoes, pasta a rice, perhaps by bulking meals out with more veg. If you haven't been given a blood glucose meter and strips to test your BG levels, then you should ask for one as it's an extremely useful tool that can help you learn how your body copes with food, especially those pesky carbs. Take a look in the thread at the top of the Newbies Section for a list of tips and useful links that will help you figure out what to do next. And don't be afraid to ask any questions that occur to you.
 
Thanks so much,my readings are on the high side started off 23's gradually came down to 9's up to three tablets may up me to 4 but I can't get it any lower,I've lost nearly 2stone in 6 weeks I don't know what to eat so tend not to,I've cut all sugar out which is hard because its everywhere.
 
That's the thing though Caly, it's not just the obvious things like cakes and fizzy drinks. It's seemingly innocent stuff like bread and cereals, pasta and rice as well. Also milk and milk products because of the lactose. I think you're doing very well to have come down that far already. What medications have they put you on?
 
Glicazide at first,now on 3 metaforam and testing 4 times a day,nurse ringing for results tomorrow said i may go to maximum of 4 and on slow release if if that doesn't work
 
When making things like white sauce or custard I substitute soya milk for diary milk as it reduces the carbs a lot. It is a matter of taste as in some things I prefer soya to diary.
 
I know I should but I didn't realise sugar was in milk now that you've said its obvious, I don't have too much milk only on my porridge.I think I need to get some books and get reading can anyone recommend any mainly for food info thats what I'm struggling with mainly.
 
There are quite a few options out there Carbs and Cals is good for telling you what the carb content of a meal or foodstuff is likely to be. Thy have both books and an app you can try, they are useful for when you're out and about. Alan Shanley's blog is great for explaining how, when and why to test and how to interpret the effects food has on you. This second is especially useful if you're trying to adjust your diet to reduce your numbers.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Its a struggle but you'll get there in the end. Ive only been diagnosed since august this year and believe me it takes time to get your head round everything. This is a great place for help and advice though.

Hi Caly. I am a newbie as well, and was very stressed over how much to eat. I can't help much but I got Carbs and Calories book. I don't understand all the different blood levels and names of test as i only had fasting glucose.
This forum is great and replies to your post have helped me with some questions so thanks to all.
i have gone a wee bit from, "i will control this condition "to "help, i don't know what i am doing". Like you,i have lost weight quite rapidly and hope it stabalises as i can't get trousers that don't look like sails.Maybe just have to look at skirts !!
