Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi Everyone. Just been told I have Type 2 Diabetes---been started on a slow release tablet so taking one a day for first week and getting to four a day by the fourth week---I havent seen a dietitician so no idea what to eat. I think I am having a few side effects to the tablets----does this sound familiar? do I carry on until hoapital appointment which is supposed to be in four weeks?
Would be really grateful of any help
Cheers K

Hi KarenC, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm guessing that you are taking metformin? Side-effects can take a few weeks to settle - hopefully by the time you have your next appointment things will feel much better.

I would suggest getting a book on the GI or GL Diet (Glycaemic Index/Glycaemic Load). Sounds complicated, but it's not really, it's just a way of choosing food so that it has the least impact on your blood sugar levels. The GL Diet for Dummies is a good introduction 🙂 Diabetes is all about carbohydrates - bread, potatoes, rice, pasta etc. - all of this will raise your blood sugar levels, but that doesn't mean you can't have them, just that you need to limit them to what your body can tolerate well. Any exercise you can do will also be extrmely beneficial at helping to keep your levels under control.

Please ask any questions you may have - nothing is considered 'silly' and I'm sure you have plenty buzzing round in your head! Diabetes is serious, but it CAN be managed well so try not to worry and take things slowly - you will get there! 🙂

Hi Karen,

I'm a newly diagnosed diabetic as well and I found that if you eat sensibly when taking Metformin it helps with the tummy side effects. My big concern is what I should be eating at the times that I need to take my medication.

Mark...

Thanks

Thanks Northerner and Mark---it feels better knowing you can ask people who are going through this too. I will def try the books and appreciate you saying any questions ok even if you think they are silly because head iss buzzing at the moment and have tons of questions.
Mark I only take one tablet a day and have to take it about same time so cant help with when you should take yours but I will def take tablet with food and see if that helps
Kxx

Re: what to eat with Metformin... It doesn't have to be a full meal. I have a banana with my morning dose and take the evening one just after dinner. If you must have it between meals, go for a low carb snack if you can. My choice would be a couple of Ryvita with low fat cheese spread and/or an apple.

Welcome to the forum KarenC 🙂
