Hiya everyone!

I've just started university at UEA, and have registered with the on-campus doctor and everything. Went for a routine health check today and some of my test results came back pretty bad and I'm not sure what they mean.

First of all, my blood pressure was high - 130 - not too sure why or what it means. Then I had protein and glucose in my urine, and it wasn't just trace amounts, so what does this mean as well?

I know this may be a little too much information, but I am on my period, so could this have affected the results? Just I had all the same tests done for my annual review before I came to uni, and as far as I know, there were no irregularities.

Please help!!

Thank you!

Vicki 🙂

Hi Vicki, your blood pressure wasn't particularly high, maybe a little so for your age, but it can depend on the stress of actually having it taken which can make it higher! I'm told mine needs to be 130/80 but it's more like 145/90. For a person your age I think they like it to be 120/75, but as I say the stress of having the reading taken can push it a little higher.

Given that your annual review didn't show any problems I think it might be an idea to discuss with your doctor why there were signs of protein and glucose in your urine - there may be a simple explanation for it. It may be to do with the time of the month, or when you ate etc. so try not to worry 🙂

Good advice there from Northerner. Maybe the stress of starting uni has affected your levels. Try not to worry too much and enjoy uni! xx

Hi Vicki,

I wouldn't say that 130 is particularly high, not worryingly so anyway and probably caused by the stress of uni/seeing a new dr etc. Also, many times when my urine has been tested it has had quite a bit of glucose in it, usually if tested after breakfast etc. Not sure about protein. Ask your gp if you are concerned. Some drs just give you factual results and leave you worrying when there isn't anything to worry about. If your test results recently were all ok I wouldn't have thought things can be bad but ask if you are worried.

Ok, so it's not all necessarily something to worry about. I've been worried about it all day, and I don't think I'll stop worrying until I see the doctor on Monday. In case you haven't guessed, I am a bit of a worrier 🙂

Perfectly natural to worry about the unknown Vicki! Hope the doctor can put your mind at ease on Monday. I'm surprised the Uni doctor didn't explain properly, or did you just get the test results today?

The protein bit will almost certainly be because you have your period. Blood has lots of protein in it, it's practically impossibly to get a "clean" sample till it's all finished - am surprised the doc didn't mention that (unless you didn't tell him?).

Hey Vicki,

I must point out that your blood pressur is fine, mine often runs at about 130/70 mmHg and that's fine both in the eyes of my GP and the consultant I see.
As for the glucose in your urine, well, the renal (kidney) threshold for dumping glucose into the urine is about 10 mmol/L. That means you must have been a little bith high when you provided the sample. I don't know about the protein though.

When I was having them, I didn't find my periods affected my test results.

At the moment you are under stress with starting uni and getting settled in, so that might explain your results. Make an appointment and see the doctor who will help you get things sorted out.

Hi again!

I saw a nurse who did the tests there and then and gave me the results. She knew a little bit about diabetes, but she wasn't a specialist, so I'm not sure how much knowledge they should have. She just knew the basics about a lot, as all students have to see a nurse when the register.

I'm quite glad to hear that my monthly may have affected the test results, as when I've tested my levels before and after meals, I've had normal results, near enough perfect, ranging from 4.9 - 6.8 which was why I was so freaked by the results. And yes, I did tell them that I had my period.

Also pleased to hear that my blood pressure isn't too much cause for concern. I'll talk more to the doctor about it when I see him. I think I'm also going to ask them to liase with the community nurses from back home. After Wednesday, I phoned them up a bit upset, but they couldn't get much out of the university practice without speaking to me first, so I'm going to sort that out when I go back, and also apologise if my nurse was a bit impatient and snappy with them - they can't stay mad at me forever 🙂

Thanks again everyone. Feeling a lot better about everything today!

Vicki 🙂
