Type 2
Hi all,
Recently been diagnosed as type 2 but am so confused as to what I can and can’t eat. Does anyone have a meal planner that they could share or point me in the right direction?
Any help will be greatly appreciated- thank you ♥️

Welcome @MammaG 🙂

There are some Meal Plans here:

https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/enjoy-food/eating-with-diabetes/meal-plans

It’s generally a case of watching how many carbs you eat (both sweet and savoury) as it’s carbs that raise your blood sugar. Different amounts suit different people so there’s not a daily carb figure you need to aim for. Some people can tolerate very few, others more. A good starting place is to look at what you’re eating now and see how you can make small changes to improve your diet.

Do you know your HbA1C? That would be the test that diagnosed you.

Thank you
I had a blood test last Thursday morning & on the Friday (whilst away on hols) I had a phone call from the doctor to say I need to go to hospital if I was feeling unwell and that I needed medication asap. The doctor stated that my blood sugar levels should be lower than 70 and mine were 117

If 117 is your HbA1C then that’s quite high. I note the doctor said you should go to hospital if you feel unwell. Is there any possibility you could be late-onset Type 1? Did the doctor mention this at all?

What medication will you be getting?

P.S - on your avatar, you’re showing as Parent. You can change that to Type 2 by clicking on your name under the telephone number top right of this page, then choosing Account Details and scrolling down to tick the box that says your diabetes type.

No the doctor didn’t mention that!
I’ve been put on metformin 500mg twice per day.
I feel really light headed & vacant all the time so wanted to make sure that I was eating the “right” foods.

If you are an ordinarily type 2 then eating a low carb diet ought to be a great help - but it would be best to cut down gradually as it can be quite a shock to reduce levels of blood glucose.
A copy of Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution from 2003 might help as it has a lot of information about low carbing, but rather than start off low, cutting back or replacing high carb foods gradually and testing your blood glucose levels after eating to see how far from normal levels you are might get at the root of the problem most effectively.

Welcome to the forum @MammaG

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Hope the changes to your diet that you are making begin to help you feel a little more like yourself.

And I hope you get confirmation of your diabetes type too.

Diabetes UK put this ‘Enjoy Food‘ guide together a few years back, which has lots of useful snippets and general thoughts about food which might help?
