At risk of diabetes
Hello
I am trying to understand this new way of eating.
I am a carb eater and struggle to find meals Dairy free, carb free, gluten free.
I’ve been eating jacket potato with beans n vegan cheese, gf sandwiches and porridge with berries.
I saw bacon, eggs and mushrooms are good, any other suggestions for lunch and dinner please?

Well you won't eat anything if you try and entirely obliterate carbs from your diet. Even lettuce contains carbohydrate but you'd have to eat an awful lot of lettuce to get up to the same amount as a potato or slice of bread - so what we try and do is avoid the really high carb foods and concentrate on the lower carb ones. Presumably you are allergic to dairy and are coeliac as you also need to avoid dairy and gluten, cos otherwise with just diabetes that's not necessary.

So any meat or fish is fine cos it's protein and you can introduce substitutes for potatoes rice and pasta, then concentrate on the green leafy veg and squashes since they're both far lower carb than root veg including spuds.

If you're only 'at risk' it isn't at all necessary to go extremely low carbohydrate. Just try reducing your daily intake to a maximum of 130g a day for starters and see what your day to day blood glucose is with that. You do have to work out to begin with how much carb you actually eat in a typical day, cos we don't know!

Potatoes, porridge, beans and bread are quite high carb foods.

Any meat, fish, seafood or eggs should be fine - plus any other protein and fat foods which aren't going to cause problems.
I make cauliflower cheese, which is just cauliflower and cream cheese and a hard cheese - you might be able to make a variation of that. Mashed swede makes a good substitute for the potato in bubble and squeak with eggs beaten in, but there are quite a few low carb veges, plus salad stuff to add variety and colour.

Hi @Roswel and welcome to the forum.
Fish, olives, avocado, tree nuts (rather than cashews or peanuts which are not true nuts) are all low carb and have good fats. Personally I like fatty meat, but some may prefer to avoid much saturated fat.
You are only 'at risk of Diabetes' so you shouldn't need to cut back much on carbohydrates, but jacket potato and bread are probably things to limit, as is portion sizes of porridge.
Be careful with tropical fruit and fruit juices, since they are almost all high in sugars (even if it's there naturally rather than added). Berries are some of the lowest carb fruit as is watermelon.

Welcome to the forum @Roswel

Many new arrivals on the forum who have been told they are at risk of developing diabetes have found success in adopting a way of eating that would suit them if they had a full-blown diagnosis.

There is no one single approach that is right for everyone, though many forum members find moderating their total carbohydrate intake (as well as cutting right back on sweet and sugary things) is very helpful.

There are a number of possible meal plans here, including some which focus on calories, as well as others which look to cut down on carbs

Hi guys, I am intolerant to dairy and gluten.
Hoping still “only at risk” but test was over a year ago and I am drinking and peeing a lot. Dry mouth. ( not lost weight though!)

I’m not much of a meat eater but gonna add more fish and chicken.
Love vegetables and fruit, though a lazy cook.
Appreciate all the tips
Thank you
