Hi.
I’ve recently joined here with the hope of getting some advice or pointers from people or family members of those who have had serious foot problems resulting in amputation.
My mum is a type1 diabetic, nearly 70 and the complications of long term diabetes are starting to show! We’re not sure exactly what will need to be operated on as yet but know it will be something.
I’d be grateful if anyone has any experience of this (themselves or family members) and or advice.
Our hospital has a great diabetes team but I want to be able to help her at home too.
TIA Anita

Hi Anita,
Sorry to hear your mum is having problems. My dad had his leg amputated 8 years ago and his other leg 6 years ago. He was really unwell for 2 years before his first leg with constant infections and having vein grafts when he was 70. But after his amputation he flourished! Second leg he was unlucky and got an antibiotic resistant infection so amputation was his only option. He is now 80. Still lives at home on his own and has carers. He now has a hoist but that's because due to different accident/injury he had in his electric wheelchair. He is amazing! He is also on dialysis 3 times a week, but nothing seems to stop him!

Thanks for your reply, so nice to hear your dad is doing well. We’re hoping the same will be true for mum too. Really pleased to know he’s still at home - we have been discussing supported living she likes the idea but I know she likes her bungalow too. Mum’s kidneys are deteriorating too, this last year this seem to have come all at once, hoping this will alleviate the pain and she can get back to being herself. Thanks again

Welcome to the forum @AnitaD

Sorry to hear about your Mum’s feet :(

Good to hear that your Mum’s hospital team is a good one - worth their weight in gold a good team 🙂
