Hi, I've had diabetes since 2009, and recently I am struggling to get my sugars down from 11.2 does anyone have any suggestions on diet, as I have been drastically changing what I have been eating but nothing seems to work. My pre evening is fine but my morning is not!!!

Hi Barb,

The approach I took was to cut or reduce all carb sources such as Bread, Rice, Pasta, Cereals & Starchy vegetables (such as potatoes), instead replacing them with green leafy vegetables grown above ground

Could you perhaps give us some info about what you are generally eating? Might help to clarify things.

As an example of what can be done on a LCHF diet.....

"fried" chicken thighs (skinless bone out) with bacon wrapped asparagus

Chicken was marinaded in beer for a few hours
Bread chicken with mix of flaxseed meal, paprika, salt & pepper and optionally garlic powder
Chicken was then "air fried" in our air fryer (could be baked instead)

Asparagus was trimmed & bundles wrapped in bacon, then baked until done

In all a great meal, very reminiscent of fried chicken for minimal carbs (estimated 5-10g), for extra nutrition serve on a bed of spinach

Thanks for that Martin. Will add to my shopping list tomorrow, can’t wait to try the asparagus

Eggs are really useful - cooked any way you like -...add mushrooms, tomato and if you are feeling flush, a small steak too....that takes care of the morning in a wonderful filling, low carb way. Or porridge with some kind of berries on the side (I throw them in and mix it up actually) yum! I have also just emptied my larder of pasta, rice, breakfast cereals and crispy snacks in bags (all of them). My sugar readings have gone from 10's to 7's in a couple of weeks...truly!!

Thanks for this, I took your advise last night and sure enough this morning my sugar level was the best it has been for a long time, 8.5!

Since the last two weeks I have been cutting out all the c**p i had been eating, crisps, cake, crumpets with lashings of butter!, so breakfast is plain porridge with cinnamon and blueberries, I snack on celery sticks and cut pepper. One apple and a tangerine, lunch is a salad with mackerel, or chick peas, or some prawns and dinner is something now with salad, or fish with veg. No more sauces, I am also 2 stone over weight. I've had a bit of a fright as my diabetic nurse took my sugar levels over two weeks ago and last year my yearly readings was 53 but this time it had shot up to 80! and they wanted to put me on insulin, I asked if they could give me two weeks to turn this around, so this is what i am doing and with the help from everyone on this forum!

@Barb Wilkins are you testing 2 hours after eating? Some people find that porridge isn't the best breakfast to have even though its marketed as being great xx

No I haven’t been testing after breakfast, maybe I should start doing so. What sort of things do you eat for breakfast?

I eat porridge with raspberries but I'm completely different to your situation as I'm taking insulin xx

If you like porridge, try an organic one with jumbo oats & stick to the recommended portion, maybe even less. I soak mine in water overnight & add a dollop of cream & a few mixed nuts & berries. I can manage it ok if I do this.
