I tested by BS an hour ago and being that it was 10.7 had a correction dose of insulin. I have just tested by BS again and it has gone up to 11.7??

Surely this isn't right? Or have I simply tested again too early?

Any help gratefully received, I'm struggling to get my sugars under constant control at the moment.

Thanks

For me it depends entirely on what is causing the high. The distance between the two readings is small enough that it could just be meter inaccuracy.

It's also not uncommon for me to have to wait over an hour for corrections to start bringing numbers down.

If they are still rising in another 30 mins I would suspect that whatever is pushing BG up is winning - of course timing can be very tricky, so that does not necessarily mean you will need more correction. Only experience and knowledge of what has gone on today can give you insight into that 🙂

Hi, it takes longer than an hour for BG to get back to target range but I would hope to see at least some downward movement after an hour, really annoying when it stubbornly stays in double figures! You mentioned that you are struggling a bit at the moment with your levels - if your total daily insulin has increased lately to cope with this, have you remembered to also adjust your correction factor in line with this?

Damn was beaten to it about increased insulin & correction.

What's your insulin sensitivity?

How long did it take you to come down in the end?

It took 2-3 hours in the end.

I was 7.6 when I went to bed last night, but when I woke this morning was up to 12.8!! I have recently dropped my Lantus by 2 units to see if I can get control of my morning figures but its not worked so far. Is there anything else that could be causing me to be high in the morning or is it most likely to be my basal dose is too high?

Depends what happens to your blood sugar at night. If you're suffering from reactive hyperglycaemia caused by your liver dumping glucose in response to a hypo, then you're probably on too much basal (although there is a school of thought that says the Somogyi effect doesn't happen).

Otherwise it could be you're not on enough basal to counter your general liver production, or you suffer from pronounced Dawn Phenomenon (where your liver pumps out a large amount of glucose first thing in the morning). Either of these will require more insulin, not less, to treat.

How do I tell which one is the issue? Bs now (just before bed) is 6.9 so guess I will see where it is in the morning.

Set your alarm for 3 am and test - this is the point at which you're levels are likely to be at their lowest. A pain, but helpful! 🙂

Thanks, i did this and at 3am this morning it had gone up to 8.7 and then 9.7 when I got up this morning. Should I be increasing or decreasing my Lantus?

Any help gratefully received as my sugars are fine the rest of the day, just not first thing in the morning.

Looks like Lantus may need to tweak upward by a unit or two.

What were you when you went to bed?

And when did you eat/bolus that evening?
