Hi Guys

It's been a while since I have posted. I have lost my way, a year ago my HBA1c was great and for some reason the same time this year my HBA1c has increased. I don't get it, I'm not eating anything differently. Any suggestions as I need to get it down as I do not want to increase my medication.

Thank you in advance

I have many times over the years had to reevaluate what I eat and adapted what I eat. I have found my tolerances to some foods have changed. Sometimes a reduction in portion has worked at other times I have had to stop eating regularly.

Thank you, think I will have to go back to basics again. The only thing I’ve changed is I’ve stopped smoking and started vaping so I did wonder if the vape liquid is causing the spike as the body must absorb something from it

I don't vape but we have a number of memeber who do without any adverse effects.

Have you consulted your doctor - or did you get a 'try harder' talk?

The nurse rang and told me to double my meds which I said no to and the dr rang as I requested an app to discuss and he told me to go on a keto diet.

I didn't notice any BG impact from switching from ciggies to a vape.

Do you track your carb intake?
Can you describe your usual menu?

I try and keep low carb the best I can, I do do a food diary but not necessarily carb intake. An average day for me would be breakfast a seeded granola, greek yoghurt with fruit, lunch either sandwich or salad with chicken, ham, cheese or tuna, or scrambled eggs with seeded bread. Dinner roast chicken, cottage pie, fish pie or stew all with veg. Tend to avoid potatoes and pasta, very rarely have take away. I drink 1 bottle of wine over the weekend so not excessive

Is the granola home made and deliberately low carb? I find breakfast has to be lower carb due to insulin resistance being higher then - my meter showed that early on. I have a 'proper' meal. How much fruit with the yoghurt, and is it a full fat low carb one? some brands are lower than others (I am just trying to highlight possibilities)
Is the bread at lunchtime a low carb one such as Livlife?
Dinner should be OK as long as the veges are low carb choices.
Some alcohol should be OK as long as it is a dry wine, but some bottles contain a week's worth of 'units' in terms of alcoholic drinks - 14 of them. It would mean that your liver is dealing with the alcohol rather than your carbohydrate intake. I do wonder what your levels would look like without the alcohol intake - I have an enquiring mind.

The granola is lizi's low sugar high fibre and I only have 25g mixed in normally with coconut muller greek yoghurt, that I haven't changed for over a year and last year was averaging about 8 -8.5 2 hours after eating. I eat the hovis seven seed 400g bread which again I've had all the way through.

Alcohol is normally a bottle of red over 2/3 days. I don't drink at all during the week cos of my working hours and my bg's don't change at all. If anything I have a lower reading on a saturday and sunday morning after the wine 😛 this is why I am baffled and don't know where to turn

I suspect that there are some changes you could try - there are 9 carbs in the yoghurt - plus the granola, another 10 there at a guess, which would put me that high easily (I aim for 7 after eating) I tend to have eggs rather a lot, with various additions, no more than 10 gm of carbs, often less.
The bread is maybe 20 gm of carbs per slice - so 2 slices of that plus breakfast, and you are at my absolute maximum of daily carbs by the time lunch is over, and I can only just get to the very top of normal, Hba1c 42.
The alcohol is probably the reason for seeing lower numbers than you might do on the weekends. I have no experience, but I have seen others mention the effect of alcohol on their testing.
This is just what I have found, and if you are seeing a gradual rise, being stricter might mean that the trend is reversed.
I can manage without medication, but if it was a choice between eating frogspawn and taking Metformin again - sorry frogs.

Thank you for your input, i will look at other options to reduce carbs. And spend some time at the weekend looking for low carb ideas. What I don’t get though is I was at 42 hba1c this time last year and eating the same. Diabetes is very frustrating

I have posted this many times , I have found that over the years I have had to review and alter what I eat a few times. Sometimes this has been reducing portion size and sometimes not eating certain things.

I might be able to give more advice in a few weeks - I was stable at Hba1c of 42 for some years, up to mid 2019, and I have just been contacted to come for another test next week, so I will see what damage I can only assume has been done by the lack of going off to dance and sing and play music all this year. It is not just the lack of activity but the fun that I have missed.

It’s annoying isn’t it. I have gone back to basics and started writing down everything I eat and recording my bgs on paper to see if anything obvious jumps out at me

I do appreciate your help thank you.
I’m sure you do miss your exercise but I have no doubt your results will still be good.

Exercise is a big thing to for me a severe lack which I know doesn’t help but I’m at work 10 hours a day then I stop off at my father in laws and cook dinner. I go out at 6.30am and get home about 8.30pm sort my brekkie and lunch out so fitting exercise in is a little difficult and feel that I’m having to make excuses but i am generally knackered by the time I get home and stop.

Yes as especially as my weight has been its lowest and most stable for the last couple of years.
I found that sometimes a bit of portion creep slips in, but I tend now have things like berries in the same bowls so I know how to control the portion.

Well - our own bodies change! - so it's unrealistic to expect them not to, isn't it?

We see the outward things like wrinkles or less hair and stuff like that - but have no idea whatsoever what any of our internals bits and pieces are up to. People do not know upfront that they have cancerous masses growing somewhere in their insides, usually - until they suffer a noticeable effect and start querying that.

Your body requires more help if you are going to continue to eat X amount of carbohydrate. You have refused to give it more help from drugs, so your doctor has actually been very sensible and suggested you reduce the carb intake.

Sorry to hear you are having a frustrating time of things @Veenorthants

Yes it’s very irritating when the same actions give very different results (though famously quoted, Einstein clearly didn’t have experience of diabetes!)

Hope you find a few small tweaks that make a big difference.
