Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi

So I was admitted 8 weeks ago with blood glucose of 22. 5 , ketones of 4.7 and a hb1ac of 103. The symptoms which only appeared 3 weeks before admittance was extreme thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, tiredness and 2 stone weight loss. I was discharged as type 2 as I am overweight and have family history. A few days later the lead clinician of the diabetes team then changed and said she thought I maybe type 1. It still haven't been unconfirmed as the blood taken could not be used. I keep getting told by the medics that it's type 2 (even though me and my mum, who is type 2, seem to be completely different). I was told that Type 1.5 only occurs in thin people. The only thing is since the age of 15, I have suffered with having low blood sugar. What do people think?

The other thing is that I constantly feel sick, especially when I eat certain foods such as pork products, could this be related to my diabetes?

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Well from the symptoms you describe and also the weight loss I'd be inclined to say you were a Type 1 but you'd have to get pushing for the tests to be done, treatment is completely different and your more entitled to things as a Type 1, what treatment are you on? And what are your BG's like now?

I highly doubt the feeling sick when you eat pork products is related to diabetes, I could understand if you'd said when you'd been eating products containing a lot of carbs but not pork, what are your BG's and ketones like when you are feeling sick?
xx

The symptoms and ketones level show you have diabetic ketoacidosis. This is more common with undiagnosed type 1 diabetes, but can also occur in people with type 2 diabetes.

Type 1.5 diabetes is basically a slow and delayed onset form of type 1 diabetes It is more commonly diagnosed in people who were originally diagnosed as type 2 with a healthy weight, because of how it initially presents. But it is not a lifestyle condition so can obviously occur in anyone regardless of weight.

So you need to speak to the lead clinician and get those blood tests to find out, as from what you have described it is impossible for us to do anything than guess.

Hi

So the treatment is Novamix insulin twice a day with 1g of metaformin twice a day. My bloods are within target. Unfortunately I don't know what my ketones are when I feel sick as I don't have a meter that can measure this, my bloods are a little higher when I feel sick and my appetite is practically nil.

Hi, the symptoms you described are very similar to what I had when I was diagnosed type 1. I would get your thyroid function checked as this could also be impacting your weight and energy levels.

Could do this tomorrow - nip into the on duty pharmacy, walk up to the prescriptions counter and ask for Ketostix, they are about £5. You can dip these in your wee (or hike your bum up off the seat when weeing and pass strip under the flow for however many seconds it says to on the tub) then shake excess wet off strip and compare to the supplied colour chart.

It’s sounds more like Type 1 to me too. I’d push for tests to check your type. People can get Type 1 at any weight, and your history of low blood sugar sounds like me.

If you are Type 1, you’ll be able, for example, to ask for an insulin pump. Quite apart from that, Type 1 is connected to a higher risk of things like coeliac disease. So I’d be pushing hard for actual confirmation.

Hello and welcome to the forum. 🙂

I feel like this when my levels are high, sick and don’t want to eat.
