Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
so iv had type 2 diabetes for 5 months iv cut down on my carbs sugars etc but i was also diagnosed with fatty liver so everything iv been told i can eat i now can not eat as everything effects the liver, so I am not allowed to eat diary , no bread at all i can only drink water im allowed 2 apples a day so from when i wake up to when i go to bed im starving and the worst thing is iv gone from 12 stone 7 to 8stone 3 in 5 months, i was told by the chemist to get food supplements from my gp as my dramatic weight loss is through my diet, so off I went to see him and told him what the chemist had said but he has sent me for a rigmarole of blood tests, i feel constantly dizzy, sick, tired, depressed, im eating chicken , veg, 2 potatoes a day baby size, 2 cream crackers, 2 eggs, and 2 apples and a rivita with tomatoes on thats my daily intake of food, can someone help me because im still waiting for a diet nurse after 5 months to explain what i can increase to feel fuller and maybe gain some weight back.

I'm sorry I can't help, I hope others here can so thought I'd give your post a bump up.
I'm sorry but I think you need to keep on at your doc to get an urgent referral to the dietitian, leaving you to lose such a huge amount of weight without professional help is oh so very wrong, TBH I think a complaint to the practice manager is in order.
Please let us know how you get on.

I don't know how severe your (non alcoholic) fatty liver disease is Mally and who told you your diet needed to be so restricted but I have the same condition and eat a typical 'diabetic' type diet. I have regular liver function tests and it's doing me no harm. Sounds like you're restricting yourself very severely and the weight loss may require you to take protein drinks. I'm not restricting eggs or cheese but your situation may be different. I suspect the massive weight loss will have had a marked positive effect on your liver anyway. It's actually suspected that most type 2's have some degree of fatty liver disease.
You need to be urgently referred to a dietician. Ask your GP to arrange it.
Make yourself a pan of home made vegetable soup. Eat nuts and fish and a nice piece of chicken! Good luck!

Hi Mally. Do you know what tests your GP has done? I hope they included Blood Glucose, and Liver function. How did you come to be diagnosed with fatty liver, and is your GP sure you still have it? When I was first diagnosed with diabetes, my GP was convinced I was type 2 ( even though I was underweight) and covinced I probably had fatty liver, because my Liver Function tests were abnormal, however, she referred me for a liver ultrasound which was completely clear. Have you had a liver scan?
Turned out in the end that I was Type 1, and in the words of the consultant I saw at the hospital, 'Your liver got angry' with the high glucose readings. It then settled by the next round of blood tests.

If you get a test meter, you can see what effect food has on your BG. That way you know what you can increase. And see what effect any changes have. I've got a SD Code Free from Amazon. You can strips from there too.
I know it won't help for a couple of weeks or so.

i have had an ultra sound also blood tests on my liver and was diagnosed with fatty liver disease normally the liver is 30 im at 50 could be worse, but i was told by the dr no diary and no red meat, with fatty liver Carbs help but as diabetic thats not possible so dont know what to do, my diabetes is under control with the food im eating now as I am off the Metformin and now diet controlled, my every day levels are 6.1 and 7.1 after food, but if I change what i eat it goes up to 8.1 , which isnt to high, the dr i seen this week was not my dr I have an appointment with him thursday as im having blood tests every 3 months to see how my liver is doing, its the rapid weight loss that is worrying me, and what i can eat to stable it out, and thank you all so much for your replys i dont feel so alone

Cheese is out - are eggs too? What about fish? How about Quorn I know it's vegetarian, but yonks ago I went to get a quick meal from a different shop to my usual cos it was handier and I accidentally bought two Quorn 'tikka masalas' instead of the chicken ones I intended - quite frankly we couldn't tell the difference, so do they do anything that tastes of red meat instead? Though I'm struggling a bit as to why red meat is off the menu - yes maybe when you were 11 st if you didn't want to get much heavier/worse liver fat - but you aren't now are you! However I'm not at all familiar with what's the norm when this is the issue.

I've just read the NHS Choices section on this (look up NAFLD - non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) and apparently losing 'over 10%' of your body weight may reduce the fat, so I should think yours must have LOL - but it depends on exactly what words are being used by the 'experts' to describe your medical condition here as to what stage it was considered to be in when you started and it does say that your GP should do 'regular' blood tests in order to keep a check on it but whether that means once a year or weekly is anyone's guess. It also says just eat a normal balanced diet which of course being NHS advice will automatically be low fat everything and include carbs and they just say try eating everything in that diet but try to have smaller portions - nothing whatever about red meat or dairy! But again - depends if it was at dangerous advanced levels or just a bit elevated I should think ?

as of two days ago i thought eggs were dairy but there not so have been having eggs each morning, iv looked on so many sites and they all contradict each other, iv bought some Irish oats as iv been advised they are a good fibre source and will help the liver, it feels like the dr's are not really bothered, oh you have diabetes here take 3 metformin a day which made me very ill as he should have said take 1 pill each day for a week then 2 the next week and so on, he plunged me right into 3, then when my liver results came back told me no red meat and no dairy, did not explain what stage my fatty liver was nor what to do next, iv waited 5 months for my eye test, im still waiting to see the dietician, everything in my diet iv done myself through research and even that maybe wrong, although my diabetes levels are marvellous, but i have no idea how many carbs i can have in the day i think at the moment im having around 20 carbs a day.
