hello there, am not sure what is going on with me. I have been sent for a glucose intolerance test on Friday as a recent blood test result has shown a blood glucose level of 7.8 after fasting along with a high cholesterol reading (i am now on statins for that). I am 47, female and obese but have now started major lifestyle changes within the last week and have already lost a few pounds in weight but ideally i would like to lose 5 stones.

What will this glucose intolerance test tell me? is it too late for me now or can i reverse diabetes before it's too late?

Replies are much appreciated as i feel worried and confused.

Hi Carina, welcome to the forum🙂 The 7.8 is slightly high for a fasting test (should normally be below 7), so the doctor is doing the glucose tolerance test to confirm whethr or not a diagnosis can be made. This involves drinking a small amount of lucazade (or similar) ands then testing your blood after a couple of hours. If this reading is above 11, then this is sufficient to confirm the diagnosis.

Try not to worry about this - you don't know yet if you are diabetic, just had one slightly high reading. If you are, then there will be a lot that can be done to help you live a perfectly normal life - you will just have to pay a bit more attention to your diet and activity levels. Medications and treatments have come on an awfully long way, particularly in recent times, and diabetes is only dangerous if you neglect it.

Please ask anything you want - lots of friendly and experienced people will be more than happy to help you! Let us know how the test goes🙂
