Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi,

I went to the doctors for some tests recently and they've advised me that after finding a high glucose reading in a urine sample that i'm almost likely type 2 diabetic.
I've just had a fasting test which i've had done this morning after fasting for best part of 14 hours (i was told that the results will be back in 48 hours) as a matter of interest i did a blood sugar test after approx 16 hours and its come back as 5.4. Would this possibly indicate that i do have type 2 diabetes?

Could just do with some advice really.

Many Thanks
Al

Sadly no one here is qualified to give any kind of diagnostic advice as no one has any medical qualification. Glucose in urine is usually only present where blood glucose levels have been in excess of 10mmol/L for some hours (which is way outside what a non-diabetic person would expect).

5.4 is within 'normal' range... *but* home testing kits are not really up to diagnostic accuracy and are not intended for that use so it would be better to wait until you have had a chat with your Dr who can give you more information and/or refer you for more tests if your situation is unclear.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply its much appreciated, I have an appointment to go over the results on Friday.

I just want to know for sure what's going on, especially as i'm experiencing all the symptoms and just want to get sorted especially as its affecting my life.

Thanks
Al

Obviously I concur with everything Mike's said for starters. If you ain't diabetic it's highly unlikely a pee test could show anything because your blood glucose should never get to 10 and spill into urine at all - even with an especially low renal threshold - that means any glucose spills over at a lower number than 10, but it still doesn't happen if you ain't got a glucose tolerance problem in the first place.

In T2, it's perfectly possible for blood glucose (or urine) to return to 'normal' levels after X amount of hours, but if you tested within an hour or so of a carbohydrate-heavy meal, your BG would have been much higher.

If the test you had this morning was 'an armful of blood' LOL, it's quite likely that this is an HbA1c test. For the sake of brevity, I'll say this measures your 'average' blood glucose over the last 10-ish weeks - by testing how much glucose has 'stuck' to your haemoglobin over that period. The glycosulated haemoglobin test LOL - far easier to say A1c ! Details here -

In any event - try not to worry cos if it is D, there's shedloads you can actually do about it if you are interested enough to do it (some folks aren't or haven't had it explained properly that they can) - and it most certainly is NOT a death sentence, nor is it necessary for any of your limbs to drop off or any of the other gory things people will insist on telling you happened to their auntie or grandad! And you will get stacks of help, support and tips from everyone here.

Please, do let us know what happens on Friday anyway?

Welcome to the forum Al 🙂
