Help Beat Diabetes - Anyone fancy a cure?

Hi all

Not sure if this should go here or in news. Happy for it to be moved...

I was asked to write a post about a new initiative to support research into the treatment and (hopefully!) cure or prevention of diabetes.

The 'Help Diabeates" campaign allows you support reserch into improved treatment/cure in the most direct way possible - by taking part in the very latest research. Essentially you sign up, answer a few questions and it makes it *much* easier for researchers to get access to the right type of people for their project (rather than just the handful they might have access to at their hospital or whatever). If there's a project that you might help with you get contacted, and decide whether or not you want to take part. Even if you volunteer you can change your mind/back out at any time so there's no obligation.

Mike - this sounds like a great idea but do you know the position re under 16's - most projects do not include children - or could i sign up as a parent? dont want to waste their time (or yours) but i couldnt see any mention of children on the link 😱

To be honest, I don't really know - I can't see it on the FAQs either... But given that the initial contact is just to allow them to call I suggest there is no reason not to offer. There are research projects which specifically require young people to take part after all (under strict supervision obviously).

If under 16s are not eligible for inclusion in the scheme I'm sure they would just tell you in that initial phone call - if so you could suggest they update their web FAQ to clarify.

It's incredibly easy to sign up: name, email, phone number, best time to call - that's it.

Can I suggest you make a bit more out of this in the marketing campaign, perhaps use headlines like "sign up to cure diabetes in less than a minute"

I've put a link to this on Reddit's r/diabetes - let's all make a push and post it on as many other forums as we can 🙂

I used a clearer title: "Help research a cure for diabetes - sign up in under a minute"

I asked the question of Aaron who initially contacted me and asked me to blog about it, who said that at the moment (because of consent issues for those under 18) the registration is for 18+ only.

They are working on a way to allow parents of children who are interested (and who agree with their children taking part!) to give consent for under 18s to be contacted - but there needs to be a slight different structure for this.

Mike, do you know their position on non-UK residents?

I guess the NHS is for the UK only, still, it would be great if they could offer links to similar sites in other countries. I'd also like to add a note on this on the other global forums I'm posting it on.
