Hi all,

I've been Type 1 Diabetic for almost 3 years and it has been a bumpy few years to say the least. I had a baby last year and I am currently 30 weeks pregnant with my 2nd and last baby!

This pregnancy has been so challenging, particularly mentally. I've experienced the worst Burnout, constant hypoglycaemia and now have background retinopathy, but I am moving forward.

I was fitted with an Insulin Pump a week ago so the lows have already massively reduced. I've restarted my blog to help me deal with my diabetes and I've had CBT.

Anyway, that's my introduction, I'll be hovering round numerous forums. Nice to e-meet you all!

Hello and welcome! Can't help you but good luck with your young and growing family 🙂

Welcome to the forum @Diabetic Unicorn

Congratulations on your pregnancy. I can’t help with any info around that, but can relate to burnout. I also know that the pressures increase with the expectations during pregnancy. Glad to read that you have now been given a pump and I hope that that helps you. I know I found it gave me a far greater control over my levels and reduced my hypos from at least one a day, so I hope that that works for you.
What pump have you been given?
Do you also have a sensor?

there is a thread on this forum specifically for parents, and there may be more relevant info in there, but there are also a number of parents on here who will no doubt have other suggestions.

Let us know how you get on.

Hello and welcome to the forum @Diabetic Unicorn 🙂 This is the best forum. 😉

@SB2015 thank you! I let myself get in this downward spiral of thought that anything I was doing was going to harm/ kill my baby - this wasn't helped by an awful DSN but I'm no longer seeing her.

I've been put on the Tandem T:Slim with Control IQ, although the Control IQ element is switched off as it's not licensed for use in pregnancy. I'm also on the Dexcom G6 which has been a life saver. Already in a week I'm having barely any hypos which has gone from 6+ a day. I had complete hypo-unawareness so I'm hoping that's going to come back soon too!

@Ditto thank you! It's nice to be able to talk to people who understand and can give practical advice x

Welcome to the forum, @Diabetic Unicorn
I can't offer any advice about pregnancy but I see you have had some great input on your other thread.
It's great news that you now have a pump - that should make things better, although a pump is not necessarily easier.

And you have one of the best user names.

That all sounds positive, and great that you have reduced the number of hypos. If you already have the TSlim with the sensors, hopefully you will be able to switch over to control Iq after the pregnancy, to create a closed loop system. A similar system (Medtronic 780G with sensors) has massively reduced my hypos and I now have one or two a month in general. I hope that the reduction in these will enable you to recover your hypo awareness.

Thank you! It's the name of my blog I love unicorns and when I was diagnosed and my sugars crazy high, I kind of imagined by blood to look like melted candy ‍♀️

Congrats on your pregnancies - but sorry to hear you’ve had such a tough time. But well done on seeking out CBT support, and in using your blog to help you process stuff.

I’ve not posted on my blog regularly in a while (though I still have a post or two in my head!) but I found it a very helpful and cathartic part of my diabetes toolkit a few years back.

Which pump are you using, and how are you finding it so far? Great to hear it is helping with hypos.

Thank you so much. The blog has absolutely been my saving grace recently, like you say an essential part of the toolkit.

I'm on the Tandem T:Slim X2 - it has Control IQ but it's currently switched off as it's not licensed for use in pregnancy. I am absolutely loving it so far. It's helped to reduce my feelings of being burnt out and the last 48 hours I've been 94% in range with no hypos at all which is amazing. The hypos were having such a big impact on me, it's mad how much more refreshed and energised I feel now, despite being heavily pregnant!

Great to hear it's working well for you - and brilliant that you’re getting a bit of head space back!
