Relationship to Diabetes

Hello everyone

I'm new to this website. I've been told by my doctor that I'm very close to developing type 2 diabetes.I'm here for advice on how to change my diet and lifestyle so I don't develop this disease.

@James212 Were you given any information about your test levels or how you should alter your diet?

Yeah, my A1c level is 5.9%
and my doctor gave me a few leaflets on dieting to prevent diabetes.

Normal A1c is 5.7% so you are just into prediabetes. Basically cutting or stopping things like potatoes, veggies that grow under the/inside ground (starchy carbs), most fruit except berries and the occasional apple, pasta, rice, pastries, pies, cakes, sweets, sugar - the hidden carbs in prepared food. Some of these will cause a blood sugar spike, this we check by using a BG meter (in most areas type 2's have to buy their own, alas) - if it gives a spike, either reduce the portion size or find a replacement that works better (ie cauliflower rice for real rice), there are plenty of alternatives to try. Lowering your carbs will also help you lose weight if you need to, plus do more exercise if you can, every bit helps.
I think I have said enough to begin with, others will no doubt drop in with their own experiences, questions, advice and support. You are in the best place here 🙂

Welcome to the forum @James212

You might find it helpful to try to make BG-friendly changes to your menu and level of activity as if you had already had a diagnosis?

There are helpful modules that you can work through in the Learning Zone in your own time (link in the main menu), and many forum members have found ‘Maggie Davey’s letter to the newly diagnosed an interesting introduction to diabetes which shows how one woman responded.
