Relationship to Diabetes

Hello everyone! I just got the news this morning that I have type 2 diabetes. I had gestational diabetes 10 years ago when I was pregnant, which meant I was at higher risk. It looks like the diabetes has been set off due to taking Tamoxifen which I started last year after being treated for breast cancer. I'm told that I'm just over the threshold so I don't need medication, just a change of diet. I didn't think my diet was too bad anyway, but I will have to look a bit more carefully at what I'm eating.

Hi @AngieG150 and welcome to the forum.

Most people don't realise that all the 'healthy diet' stuff that GPs, the NHS and the Government put out is only for healthy people. Us Type 2 diabetics are diabetic because our bodies can't deal with all the carbohydrates in out meals. All carbs (starches as well as sugars) almost immediately break down into glucose (a sugar) when we eat them.
So all this stuff about eating lots of whole grains and 5 a Day (especially if it is fruit or below ground veg) is practically guaranteed to make out diabetes worse!
Cereal for breakfast is probably the worst start to the day for a diabetic, although tropical fruit, fruit juice and toast come close. They are all sugar plus more sugar when digested. Eggs, cheese, meat or fish is much better - many of us have bacon for breakfast and find it healthier for us than porridge.

Sorry to hear you have just tickled over the threshold into diabetes territory.

Hope your Tamoxifen treatment was successful.

Do you remember if you were told the result of your HbA1c check? The diagnosis threshold is usually 48mmol/mol, and if you are not far past the post, you may find that your diabetes will respond well to a few fairly modest tweaks and changes rather than a wholesale rethinking of your menu. Perhaps just a little portion reduction of the main sources of carbs in your meals, as well as the more obvious cutting out of sweet and sugary things.

Thanks! They said it was 50, so only slightly over. I have already started by increasing my veg portions to replace the carbs, although I won't be cutting them out altogether. I'm also going to formulate a plan to get more exercise. I've been told that if I can get my levels consistently at 47 or below I can be taken off the register, so that is my goal.
