Hi everyone my name is Claire, I look after my mum who is 87 she is type 1 diabetic. Mum has just come out of hospital after 2 weeks as she had very high blood sugar and her kidneys began to fail, I'm trying my best to understand everything but now and again there are a few things I'm not to sure about so would be great to be able to ask questions and get advice from you.

Welcome to the Forum - unfortunately - but none the less sincere

As you have implied, reading through old threads in the appropriate sections would be a good start, as would be looking at The Learning Zone - red box at the top of this page, and the various headings at the top of the Home Page; and sorry if there is a lot to take in

But also importantly, there is a wealth of knowledge & experience on here, so feel free to ask any questions
Nothing is too silly or unusual, we don't judge people, we try to help them, so ask away, you will not be laughed at or criticised or made to feel stupid or inferior

Hi and welcome from me too.

So sorry to hear that your Mum has needed hospital care due to her levels being high and her kidneys struggling. I hope she is feeling better now and her levels are more stable.
Please feel free to ask any questions you have. We can't guarantee to give you a single right answer, but you may get a range of answers one of which may or may not be the right one for your Mum. Diabetes is quite individual, so what works for one person may not work for others. What we can do is give you ideas of what to try based on our own experience, and by trial and error you will hopefully figure out what the right answer is for your Mum.
Look forward to hearing more from you and hopefully supporting you in caring for your Mum.

Welcome @Claire05 🙂 Sorry your mum’s not been well. I hope she’s a little better now. Do ask whatever you want. No question is ‘silly’.

Have your mum’s blood sugars improved a bit now? What insulins does she take?

Welcome @Claire05
As others have said before me, ask questions and check out the Learning Zone.
The Diabetes UK helpline is also very helpful if you need any assistance. Their number is at the top of the page.

Welcome to the forum @Claire05

Sorry to hear about the difficulties your Mum experienced recently. Hope she is much improved now.

Well done for finding us, and while we can’t offer medical advice, I hope asking questions here, and sharing experiences will really help to fill in some of the blanks, and help you support your Mum.

Has your Mum been living with diabetes for many years? Or has it only come on fairly recently?

We have lots of friendly folks here, and there are literally centuries of lived diabetes experience on the forum, so ask away with any questions, or just vent and let off steam about how frustrating a condition it can be, or to express any worries and fears you have. We want to support you, and hope we can give you some pointers that might help in the day-to-day BG juggling. 🙂

I'm getting older and frankly I'd far rather someone who takes the trouble to find out 'how to look after me' was looking after me than someone who doesn't know what they're doing and has to ring a doctor before they do summat - so you are exceptionally welcomed by me! Well done you for joining.

Anything you want to know, ask! No such thing as a silly question on here!
