Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 4 years ago. Now on 3 medications but HbA1c continuing to increase and my high blood sugar is affecting my cognitive performance so have had to make decision yesterday to take time of work as was making mistakes and I work with the public providing support and advice so I couldn’t do my job well. So been doing some of the courses on the site and thought would join the forum to see how others have managed their diabetes. I have autism and with that sensory difficulties so my diet is limited making it harder to manage with changes to my diet and I have mobility issues so that limits my exercise to short walks with my dog.

Glad that you have found us, and pleased that you have decided to get to grips with your diabetes.
the increase in glucose levels in our blood will come from any carbohydrates that we eat. It can be useful as a starting point to work out how many carbs you are currently eating at each meal. You can then start to look for some swaps to reduce the amounts to a level that you body can cope with. The information about carbs is included on packaging. Ignore the bit ‘of which sugars’. We need to take account of all the carbs we eat whether sugary or not.

Thanks for tagging me as I’ll say hello and welcome. I totally understand you on some of the issues autism can cause for managing diabetes. The first thing that has helped me is to explain my need to see the same person each time for appointments, my autism is on my medical records and a conversation about that helped. I see the same dr each time now.

For the sensory issues with food, I also find that both hard to manage and hard to explain. I have rules around food and can only manage certain types of food and textures, but I don’t really have a concrete list of what the rules are. I do find it hard to try new foods, i have a limited range of things i can eat, struggle with things with too many flavours, and prefer my foods seperate.

I find my stress levels directly correlate with my ability to try new foods. So, if I want to try a new food I won’t plan that for a weekday after a long day at work but at the weekend when I’m more relaxed. I also won’t try multiple new foods at the same time.

What kind of foods do you eat, or would you like to try?
