Hello Chappers,

Welcome to the forum.

I doubt that there are many people who don't get thrown when diagnosed. However, the trick is to learn about the condition, understand what you can do to deal with it and then put it into practice!

There are loads of resources out there to help you (my particular favourite is the NHS run Diabetes X-Pert course which runs for one afternoon a week for six weeks --> check with your GP and see whether you can get on it, I'm sure that it'll help answer many of your questions).

Best wishes,

Andy 🙂

hi welcome to the forum ...i spent days crying when i was first dx ...it all seems so confusing ...remember dont try and change everything at once ...one step at a time and well done for finding here ...we will support you all the way ...no questions are regarded silly here and ranting is also very welcome !! what meds have they put you on ..or are you diet and excercise?

Hi Chappers, welcome to the forum 🙂 There is a lot to take in, but don't feel you need to know everything from Day 1 - start with the basics and you can fine tune things over time. Some people find that, whilst not the greatest news, the modifications they are encouraged to make to their diet and lifestyle leaves them feeling fitter and healthier than they might otherwise have been. In the words of an unknown sage -'Well controlled diabetes is the major cause of absolutely nothing'! 😉

Some very useful resources are available to help you understand your diabetes so you can learn to manage it and live life without it trying to dominate you.

Try reading Maggie Davey's letter to newly diagnosed Type 2s:

and also Jennifer's good advice:

Plus, a book I always recommend, as do many others here: Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker (amazon link)

Chappers, I've moved your question about help groups in the NE, to the General Message board. Hopefully, you'll get more replies there.
