I'm type 2 insulin dependent on 5 injections a day in my late 80s and have been diabetic for 32 years. I'm interested in swapping notes with anyone with similar experience

Hi and welcome.

Which insulins are you on and how do you find them?
How is your diabetes management eg latest HbA1c, do you get many hypos or high readings etc.?
Are there any aspects of your diabetes management that you need help with?

I am only 2 years diagnosed and use Levemir and Fiasp (previously used NovoRapid) and I have a Libre sensor to monitor BG levels which is a wonderful bit of kit and saves on a lot of finger pricking but more importantly gives you loads more infoirmation about what your levels are doing between finger pricks and particularly overnight. My last HbA1c was 48 but it took a lot of effort to get it there. I think my next one might be a little higher unless I really pull my finger out and work harder at it in the next few months.

I am on humalog (4x a day) and lantus (1 at bedtime). I have been diabetic for 33 years and on insulin for most of that time. For the past 6 years i have been using Freestyle Libre sensors and have found that it has increased my control enormously. My average gloucose for last 90 days is 8.3 mmol/L. Estimated HbA1c 6.8%.No diabetic clinics due to Covid.
I'm afaid I'm a fanatic record keeper and log my readings before every meal to decide how much insulin to take in addition to reading my sensor at least 15 times a day.

Don't be afraid! We highly recommend keeping records here on the forum and I am sure the DSNs at the clinic love you for it. Libre is wonderful. So pleased you have it and it is helping you.
How do you find Humalog and Lantus? Have you ever used any other insulins? How long do you pre bolus the Humalog.... particularly at breakfast time? Just wondering how quickly it kicks in?

I have been on Humalog for around 25 years prior to that I can't remember.
At breakfast I allow about 20 mins, lunch and evening meal around 10 mins but if my BG is below 5.5 even less.

Thanks for that. It usually takes about 45mins with Fiasp on a morning for me and sometimes as long as an hour and a half with Novo(not so)Rapid but I appreciate everyone is different. Just makes it too easy to get distracted and lose track of time and then get caught out by a hypo because you forgot to actually eat breakfast!

I seem to recall that when I started on insulin around 30 years ago there was some reluctance to take humalog because it is artificial i.e. laboratory made as opposed to animal based, Does this still apply? I find humalog excellent and am very pleased I opted for it from day1. It is very fast acting and I can tweak my dose depending before meals depending on my blood glucose reading.🙂

I think you will find people on animal insulins are a rarity, and can't remember which but one of the animal Insulins is no longer available.
