Oh sweetheart ! What a double whammy!

Diabetes is shattering news always whenever it happens and to compound it, you've also suddenly got a full dose of extra pregnancy hormones. What are the plans that both you and your medical team have for both things?

Hello @Littleladycat21 and welcome to the forum.

There is a great deal of help and experience available here, including other mums who have shared their experiences of pregnancy and the joys of their baby pictures with us. I am sure they and other members will offer support and advice.
Hopefully as well you will get good help and care form your medical team.

Very best wishes, and please ask any questions, or just let us know how it's going.

Welcome to the forum @Littleladycat21

Sorry to hear news of your diagnosis, but congratulation on your pregnancy.
This is a manageable condition and there is plenty of help available on the DUK website as well as from others on here.

Do ask any questions that you have. Nothing is considered silly on here.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I just feel like everything I eat spikes my numbers and I'm pretrfied of something going wrong with the baby. I'm in insulin 5 units before food, metaforin after breakfast and after lunch. My blood targets are 5.3 in the morning which I never am! And 7.8 after food which of late I never am. Meals I eat are low carb high protein but know starting to spike. I was 11.4 after dinner last night! Feel so guilty and and then selfish at the same time. These feelings consume my day.

Hi @Littleladycat2, also welcome to the forum.
I wouldn’t worry too much those numbers too much, people without diabetes often have numbers like that too. The important thing for you is to work out what your body does with the different carbs when your eating, I hope your doctor told you the best way to start would be getting a blood glucose meter and test yourself before eating and 2 hours after and keep this info along a good diary, your aiming to be 2-3 units more 2 hours after eating and you will soon get a idea what’s going to work for you.
Check when you wake up too, I’m always in the 6’s and 7’s so don’t stress too much you can fine tune those already reasonable number. As for how you will be being pregnant I have no idea being a typical man but as others have said just ask a question an you will get plenty of help here. I wish you the best of luck with your diabetes journey and for your little @Littleladycat21 on the way

The target ranges for pregnant women are much narrower than other Diabetics !

Well like I said in my post I know nothing about being pregnant so you might want to elaborate on your comment to help @Littleladycat21 understand what she needs to do

The diet should not be high protein. You and the baby need fats - that is what brain and nervous system require, and what is used to fuel all the things going on in pregnancy.

You could try having your meal time insulin a little earlier to reduce the spike. You should also ask about correction doses - extra fast-acting insulin without food in order to get any highs down.

I’d also ask about adjusting your mealtime 5 units according to what you’re about to eat.

Are you on a basal/long-acting insulin too?

Recently diagnosed and found out I'm pregnant too! Really struggling constantly upset.

Hi @Littleladycat21, welcome to the forum!

Sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis but congrats on your pregnancy!

From the hormones the the shock of a diabetes diagnosis, it's no wonder you're feeling upset. I know it may feel scary right now, however, you're in the right place. Many people manage diabetes perfectly fine when they're pregnant, it's just a matter of getting the right information and getting to know how your body is operating during these times.

Have you been able to speak with your midwife or any other health care professional? They will be best placed to help as they know the specific details of your health profile. I know that due to the current times, that's not always easy but do try and get in touch with your GP or someone similar.

We have so useful info on our site about pregnancy so do have a look when you get the chance https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/life-with-diabetes/pregnancy/during-pregnancy.

We're here to support you along this journey so please do let us know if you have any specific questions or concerns that we can help with. 🙂

Welcome to the forum @Littleladycat21

Not at all surprising to feel a little overwhelmed by getting both of those bits of news in quick succession.

The targets for BG management during pregnancy are challenging, and insulin sensitivity and requirements can change dramatically at different stages, so do lean on your clinic and their experienced advice to get essential pointers.

You might also want to browse the forum’s Pregnancy section to read other forum members’ experiences and to get some reassurance that while it’s a challenge, a healthy pregnancy with diabetes is definitely do-able.

Congratulations! And look forward to following your pregnancy as it unfolds 🙂
