Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello I’d thought I’d introduce myself, Iv recently been diagnosed type 2 diabetes and taking metformin 1000g slow release daily. 3 years ago I had a stroke and Iv pilled on weight since . I need advice and possible meal ideas ☺️. At present I feel absolutely shocking, tired , stomach feels like a washing machine and I need to get out of this knightmare. ☺️ Look forward to joining the forum x thanks

Metformin is notorious for causing upsets to the gut - I was in a terrible state after only a few weeks taking just one tablet a day.
An ordinary type two can usually reduce blood tests down towards normal by cutting out high carb foods. I find that the food is so nutritious I only need to eat twice a day, and not very much these days of not going out.
For dinner yesterday I ate a chicken leg - but I could have roasted some swede along with it and mashed it with some cream, and either roasted some other veges done a salad or a stir fry - if I'd wanted a dessert I could have had sugar free jelly and berries, or yoghurt or real custard or even some home made icecream made with eggs and cream.
Basically meat fish seafood and dairy are low carb options, and there are numerous veges and salads which are low carb.

Hi Angie, your certainly in the right place. I have found this forum very informative, you will find lots of helpful threads throughout. I've just discovered the what I ate yesterday thread which is brilliant for meal ideas plus many more. As Drummer has said most people here follow a low carb high fat diet so lots of useful hints and tips floating about.
Good luck on your journey

Hi @Angiec66, and welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear about your problems and we will do what we can to help you out. Many of our members have been where you are now and have got things under control so read around and see how they went about it. One thing you will find is there is no magic, fits everybody, method. We are all different and we all find the way which suits us.

Losing some of the weight you have put will almost certainly be a good thing. Easier said than done, but if you read around you will find that many have gone down the low carbohydrate route with success. Maybe that would suit you, and it has the added benefit of helping to control blood glucose.

Do you know what your HbA1c result was? That is the blood test which will have led to your diagnosis. It will tell you where you are on the diabetic spectrum, and so the length of the journey in front of you. How much weight are you looking to lose?

The stomach problems could well be due to the metformin (it is well known for it) and for most it subsides after a short period. If it does not, then go back to your GP, there are other medications to try.

Ask questions, nothing is considered too silly on here!

Welcome to the forum @Angiec66

Have a good look around and fire away with any questions. Nothing will be considered too obvious or ‘silly’.

For an introduction / overview to T2, members here frequently recommend Maggie Davey’s Letter and Gretchen Becker’s book, as very helpful starting points.
