Thank you i was wondering if you be able to help me with a worry I have. I am doing ok thank you but been unwell and been asked to monitor my blood sugars more I ran out of test strips was problem so we ordered a machine on line as didn't have any strips left was waiting on stock from my chemist. I tested on both machines both gave different readings is this normal as worried me last night one machine my old one said i was 9 new one said i was 12.5 hope you can help Louise

You've been asked by your doctor to test your BG more? in which case he should have prescribed a meter and strips!!

Meters are allowed to be 10-15% either way, 'out'. You'll get a slightly different result from different fingers at the same time, too. Have you tried using both at the same time using the same blob of blood for both and seeing what the difference is? Cos it's anyone's guess which one is more likely to be correct.

I used the same blood same finger on both machines and gave 2 different answers I have to test x2 times daily but i ran out of strips and chemist kept saying sorry no stock so bought machine which come with strips

Ive had a meter for 2 years now just stirips out stock only just got them in

And have the previous readings on the original machine matched what your HbA1c level came out as, when that was tested? If so it's more likely to be right, I would think.

If you have had the old meter for 2 years, were the test strips still in date and was it a new unopened pot of test strips or one that had been opened and some used a while ago. Test strips can degrade once the seal is broken as a result of moisture in the air and are generally recommended to be used within a month I think, once you open the pot. So if this was a strip from a pot that has been sitting around for several months or longer, the new test strip might be the most accurate, but it is normal for there to be some variation between meters and they only give you an idea of your levels not a really accurate reading.
You need to get back in touch with your GP surgery and sort out a prescription for some new test strips if your GP has asked you to test. It may be that the test strips for your original meter have been discontinued... which one is it?... or it may be that your pharmacy don't stock them and you need to ring round other pharmacies to source them and then take the prescription there.
