Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello everyone,

my name is Eve, I am 23 years old. I was diagnosed with Diabetes Type 1 at the age of 9.
I' ve had ups and downs with it. I wouldn't say it has stopped me from doing what I wanted, I even walked the Camino de Santiago which was a big dream of mine two years ago. However, as all of you know, it has not been easy and there are specific episodes in which I just loather the fact diabetes even exists.
Recently, I've found myslef all the time worried about future pregnancy, there are so many questions related to it that I don't have an answer for and it is all just making me super scary and anxious.
Last night I kept on crying and crying and couldn't relax from all of these awful thoughts I had on my mind. That is why I decided to reach out and see if there is anyone else feeling this way. I am open to conversations of all kinds and would like to help with useful tips as well. It just feels nice to be a part of a community.
Wishing you all a pleasant day : )

Hello @Eve Lazarova ,

Thank you so much for joining the Diabetes UK online community. I so sorry to hear about the stress and anxiety pregnancy is causing you. I can only imagine how difficult that must be.

Have you spoke to your GP? It also may be helpful to look at some of the pages in our pregnancy section which can be found here.

Hello, Josh,

thank you for your support.
Yes, I did speak to my endocrinologist and my closest friend.
I am feeling a bit calmer now as my doctor managed to explain there are healthcare professionals specialized in pregnant patients with diabetes type 1.
I guess when the right time comes, I'll feel ready and calm to go through it.
I'll try not to worry about it.
It's just that when anxiety occurs, I'm not able to shift my focus and think about anything positive in life.
It does feel good however, knowing I am not alone and that I can find support within my family, freinds and the people here.
I also downloaded the JDFR pregnancy toolkit which is quite useful. I will try to relax now and think aout something else : )
I will have plenty of time to think about a baby when the time comes.
All the best,
Eve

Hello and welcome to the forum @Eve Lazarova 🙂

Wow, kudos on walking the Camino de Santiago. You must have felt so accomplished.

Welcome to the forum Eve.

I am glad that you have support around you and people to talk to at this time.

It is great that you are taking the trouble to research pregnancy beforehand. There is specialist support available to support you through a pregnancy, and in some cases access to Libre readers or even CGMs. I hope that you find the downloaded pack useful.

Come back with any questions that you come up with.

Welcome to the forum - Rember no question is silly so ask any questions :D

The NHS offers brilliant care both from when you are starting to think about trying cos it's important to attempt to gain serious long term control of your BGs before you even 'catch' and constantly thereafter - we have only one currently pregnant member of the forum just now, and she's now getting pretty close to her due date, so it's exciting.

Another lady who was with us throughout her second pregnancy treated us to lovely photos on that baby's second birthday, recently!

All you have to do - is ASK!!!! when anything is normal-ish again, but even when it isn't normal - the NHS is still there when we need em anyway!

Hello @Eve Lazarova - a warm welcome from me as well.
As you can see from the replies you have had there is a great deal of knowledge and support here, so please keep posting, let us know how it's going and we will always try to answer any questions.
I hope that the anxiety diminishes and gets replaced with more positive thoughts.

At the end of each day, I usually try think of at least 3 good and positive things that have happened that day - they are always there to be found.

Welcome to the forum @Eve Lazarova

Pregnancy and T1 used to be a very very difficult prospect, but these days the outlook is much much more positive, and while it is still challenging, there are lots and lots of bouncing, happy, healthy babies born to T1 Mums every year.

We have a good number here in this very forum!

And new changes in the NHS mean that CGM is being made available to all pregnant women in the UK, to improve outcomes further (I’m not sure if it’s started quite yet, but is due to very soon).

If you want a practical, grounded and pretty funny account of a T1 pregnancy to browse through, I would recommend Alison’s pregnancy blogs on ‘Shoot up or put up’. Her daughter is well into childhood now and a picture of health.

Thanks : )

Yes, I did.
The feeling when I reached the sea (I walked all the way to Finisterre, three days walking after Santiago)...words cant's describe it. It's a mixture of emotions,...just said to myself "Well, i am blessed" and enjoyed the moment.
I hope all of us can experience more of those moments when we feel we have accomplshed something we longed for. ; )

Take care and all the best : )

I am feeling much better now, I guess it was such a period then,
I am trying to stay on the positive side. It is great to be a part of the community here.
However I needed some time away from these thoughts, which is why I am replying now.
Take care and hope you have a lovely day : )

Even better! Like on the shipping news? I didn't know it was up that way, I thought it was off Scotland. :D
