Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone,
55 year old male, Type 2 for almost 4 years now but no medication only diet /exercise controlled.
HbA1c is 38 mmol (5.6%), glucose 5.8mmol and total cholesterol 3.7. Was told by my work on Friday not to come in this week as I was deemed to be in the high risk category. They have not stipulated any time on this and seem unsure if it should be 7 or 14 days. Just looking for a bit clarity if possible. I did have a tickly cough the last 2 weeks but that is normal for me at this time of year as I work outside on the roads and am out in all weathers.
Any advice would be much appreciated as the gov guidelines are not very clear.
Thanks,

Welcome to the forum @

This is a worrying time, but those of use with Diabetes are no more likely to catch the virus.
The DUK statement is regularly updated and gives a clear account of the government position.
At present, unless you have other conditions, we are being advised to socially distance, rather than isolate (although I know that everything is changing all the time)

I hope that helps

Hi and Welcome to the Forum @Murffy - Nice to see you doing so well where your diabetes is concerned, im sure you will be a great help with hints/tips to others on here.

Its very confusing all this corona stuff - seems to change on a daily basis. My understanding is....whilst diabetes is in itself a serious condition it hasnt warranted 'isolation' at this point. Rather that we are being encouraged to 'self-distance' Avoid crowded places, meeting friends/family, Socialising.

Government advice is referred to in the Diabetes UK statement

Hi @Murffy and welcome. It is such a worrying time for us all and I feel just as conflicted as I am also an asthmatic with heart disease, l am able to work from home luckily and am social distancing as much as possible, only going out for shopping and my daily walk in the countryside. I think all we can do is reduce our contact the best we can. Stay safe and well 🙂

Thanks for the replies, been told to wait for call from work but will phone them on Friday depending on any changes in gov advice. Hopefully I can get back to work sooner rather than later.
Dont really have any special hints /tips as the main thing I cut from my diet was chocolate biscuits and very little fried food, my wife has always preferred to grill food and we do eat a fairly balanced diet. My own personal weakness is crisps, I know I eat more of them than I should but am trying to remedy that. Also planning on doing more walking, fishing, metal detecting and photography this year but obviously the next few months are an unknown at this stage.
My diabetes nurse told me “everything in moderation, you don’t have to stop eating anything” and it seems to work for me but obviously everyone is different.
Stay safe everyone and take care.

Dave.

Welcome to the forum @Murffy

Looks like the situation has tightened up this evening, along with the ‘stringent social distancing’.
