Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, I’ve been a lurker for a while but inspired to join in by the unmentionable virus. I am type 2 and was diagnosed on Christmas Eve last year (by text message that read “you have diabetes, make a ppt (sic) with nurse” I didn’t even know I was being tested for diabetes although to be fair I did suspect it. I was 124kg so high bmi also.
Anyhow once I’d got over the shock I started trying to educate myself on how to manage/ attempt to reverse it. I’m lucky enough to live with a chef and am pretty knowledgeable about food and nutrition. I immediately stopped eating all refined sugar and haven’t touched any cakes, sweets, chocolates etc since (they were my downfall I believe) and adopted a healthy eating low carb diet. I’ve lost 14kg in the last 3 months and feel am managing it well. Sadly I was due for next test end of March but (understandably) that’s been postponed until the current situation blows over Anyway just thought I’d say hi, looks like we’ll all be spending more time indoors so helps to pass some 🙂

Welcome! Glad you've taken the plunge and introduced yourself. Sorry you are going to miss your test. You must be so keen to know how your amazing effort had worked out.

Welcome to the forum @Debdeb
Glad that you have taken the plunge. There is loads of info available on here, and people always happy to answer any questions that you have.

With regard to the Corona virus this link to the latest advice from Diabetes UK is pretty comprehensive

Any questions just ask

Hello @Debdeb
So pleased that you have joined the forum, and if it was this dreadful virus that inspired you, then that is the first positive thing that I have heard of that it has done.
You sound to have done amazingly well with managing your diabetes, and I hope you will join in our discussions.
May be you can pass on some tasty tips low carb eating tips from your chefy husband!

That Christmas Eve message is certainly rates as one of the worst examples I've heard of timing and method of telling someone the Diabetes message. Most of us found it a dreadful shock - but getting a message by text on Christmas Eve is a dreadful example of lack of empathy.
Any way well done, you got over the shock and took good action.
Hope you enjoy the forum.

Happy de-lurking @Debdeb!

Glad you‘ve made the switch to poster from read-only 😉

Huge well done on your great start since Christmas and your impressive weight loss and diet changes.

Look forward to hearing more of your story over the coming weeks.

Stay safe, and happy ‘social distancing’!

Hi @Debdeb - glad you could join us, you seem to have thing well under control.

I wouldnt worry too much about the next test (would be nice to have it for info but its not the end of the world). You have lost a good amount of weight and taken the sugar monster by the throat and kicked him out - well done for that. And having a great awareness of carbs is to your credit - some folk dont know carbs are just as bad as sugar!. So im sure, with all you have done so far your levels will be going in the right direction. (another point to remember, sometimes we dont get a re test for 6 months, so having one at 3 months isnt crucial to things). Hopefully a test will come when this worrying time with the virus calms down a little.

Im sure you will be of great assistance to others on here. Looking forward to hearing more. Again, well done on your work so far.

Thanks everyone for your greetings and warmth 🙂 I’m don’t mind missing out on next test and realise there’s far far bigger issues now (it’s was just my curiosity I wanted satisfying). I’m doing what I can with social distancing but my employer doesn’t seem to think it’s too much of an issue, I’m off at the moment but looks like back to work (handling cash, face to face with members of the public) next week. I’m pretty shocked by the lack of support from them for ‘vulnerable’ people, they reckon that as long as I follow the everyday advice they’re fine for me to work ( even though there’s very few customers, plenty of young healthy staff and I could do some of my work from home if allowed). I guess on the bright side they are doing what they can to keep people in jobs. Who else here is continuing working (not from home?) I guess after the restaurant and bar closures announced tonight there can’t be many!
