My daughter (7) was diagnosed with type 1 in September, she was rushed to A&E as DKA so as I'm sure some of you can imagine - was stressful and full of worry.
I've never actually written on forums so I don't really know what I'm supposed to say :D
She's doing a lot better now and we're getting the hang of carb counting.
Thanks ☺

Welcome to the forum. If you have any questions feel free to ask them :D x

Welcome @Noodlesx, I am pleased that you have joined the forum.

You are already finding that things are getting easier, and that you are getting the hang of carb counting. Well done. There is a lot to get your head round at the start but it is amazing how much info you end up storing about different foods. I have become quite an expert on the carbs in many of the biscuits available!

A book that I found useful, and still dip into is Type1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas. I find the it is well explained and regularly updated, so worth getting the latest copy, since the tech available to us is changing so fast now.

How are things in school? Has there been good support there?

It is good to hear that your daughter is coping with it all well and in the end it will become part of ‘normal’ life. In the future you might be interested in joining one of the Diabetes UK Type1 Family Weekends. These are held in various places north and south, and provide support for the parents, the children with T1 and also for their siblings. I have recently come back from one as a volunteer and it was so enjoyable, and great to see children supporting each other and discussing their diabetes openly, comparing pumps, test meters, ...

If you have any questions at all, just ask. Nothing is considered silly on here.

I'm having to brush up on my maths a lot just to help make sense of it all!
The school, luckily I've got a teacher there who actually has type 1 herself so that's great and she's been brilliant with my daughter and myself. However I'm a little concerned that the other members seem to take it seriously. I have already spoke to my diabetic nurse about it and she's told me she'll go through it again with them, really explain how important it is because they've let her get to 2 before.
My daughter, she knows when she's feeling low and I think at the moment she's having fake hypos where she says she feels shaky, but when I test her she's fine.
Are anger issues a side effect of hypers? Because when she has them, she's like a different child! It's crazy! And in regards to it being like normal, she's already doing the finger pricks herself now and she's helping with priming her insulin (with guidance obviously). I'm more than happy for her to be eager to learn and her older brother is too, which is great.

Sounds like you’ve got some good support around you @Noodlesx which is great. And your daughter seems to be adjusting and adapting brilliantly.

I have found that high BG definitely can make me much more frustrated. I think part of that is just the frustration of seeing high BGs as negative feedback on my ability and efforts in BG juggling. But I also think there’s a physiological element to the mood change too.

Fake hypos should ease over the next few weeks as your daughter’s ‘glucose thermostat’ resets to more in-range levels.

Hi - there are meters that can do the maths for you - the Roche AccuChek Expert meter (though I think they use the Insight meter now) and certainly the Insulinx used to do it. Ask your DSN!
