Relationship to Diabetes

I am new to this forum. I am living with diabetes type 2 diagnosed October 2012. I am taking mertformin, gliclizide and alogliptin to manage the illness. Any advice on maintaining normal sugar levels is most welcome. Looking forward from learning from you all
 
Hi and welcome.

The best way to manage blood glucose is to reduce carbohydrate intake. Many of us follow a low carbohydrate diet, so we not only cut out sweet stuff but also drastically reduce or completely eliminate the amount of bread, potatoes, rice and pasta we eat and also eat a minimal amount of fruit, usually in the form of low carb options like raspberries, strawberries and blackberries. This may seem like there is nothing else to enjoy but a low carb diet can be very enjoyable once you get your head around it. If you do not need to lose weight, you need to increase your fat intake to maintain your body weight, which becomes a low carb high fat diet and that is really enjoyable and sustainable as a result. If you need to lose weight then keeping quite low fat as well as low carb, will force your body to burn body fat stores. Increasing your exercise levels is also important, even if it is just a brisk 10 min walk each day if you are able.

I am afraid it is just a case of low carbohydrate, as low as you can manage and increase the exercise levels. AS Antiram said, what are your levels now?

Thank you for the advice, am going to try high Fat diet as I do not wish to loose weight. Best wishes x
 
Hi, and welcome.

I've managed to stabilise my BG levels by following a low carb/high fat diet and increasing my exercise levels. I found one particular book really helpful - Can I Eat That? by Jenefer Roberts. It's not a diet book, although though there are some recipes in it, but it does explain what happens depending on what you've eaten.

If you're happy to share the information, what are your levels at the moment?

Like Anitram I am a think your HBA1c seems high and I would have expected it to ring warning bells with your GP. Have they suggested anything other than medication to get your blood glucose levels down?
