Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I was diagnosed by my GP 12 (13?) years ago initially as type 2 as I was in my 30s but with all the classic type 1 symptoms. It is thought that I was in the honeymoon period and the medication I was on for another condition controlled my diabetes until I took myself off it. I moved over from tablets to insulin while trying for a baby. About 2 years ago thd consultants finally agreed that I was type 1. Until this month I was given minimal support and only learnt to carb count 4 weeks ago! As a result my Hba1c is much higher than it should be but the next one should be better. I found support from other people with T1 diabetes on a recent education course to be invaluable and so have joined this forum.

Welcome Lill

I was diagnosed nearly 12 Years ago, but by then I was in Ketoacidosis so they picked up the T1 straight away. I was a bit older than you (53) so could easily have been another misdiagnosis as T2!

Like you I found it great to meet other people on the education course (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating at that time) as they were the first I had met with T1. Apart from that I have learnt much of what I know from others on here, and there is plenty of support both practical and emotional from people that just ‘get it’.

Glad you have found the forum. Ask absolutely any questions hat you have.

Welcome Kill, glad you found us. I too and others on the forum were diagnosed wrongly as type 2. I was 42, took me 9 months of struggling on as few carbs as possible and the help and support of this forum for me to get correctly diagnosed. What course did you go on? I did Dafne and like you, found the support of others so helpful

I went on a local Kent course, one day a week for 4 weeks with a DSN and dietician who taught us basic carb counting the first week and then looked at our BG records to advise us further. It was the first time I have never felt judged and as a result am looking after myself for the first time in years. Turns out I was injecting far too much novorapid and am lucky I didn't end up in hospital. Because the high insulin levels made me starving hungry, I piled on loads of weight and with adjusted doses this is coming off.

Hello!

I’m in Kent as well. I’m waiting to go on a course locally. I was misdiagnosed as type 2 when I lived in Hampshire but moved to Kent in January and have found the support of the drs and nurses brilliant. Glad you’re finding the support offered positive 🙂

Hello and welcome @Lill , glad you've joined us 🙂

Good to hear how much your carb counting course and meeting others dealing with the same/similar challenges has helped you. I'm still trying to get referred for a course after 41 years!🙄

Joining this forum and speaking to others juggling all the stuff diabetes throws at us has been the best thing for me. I've been able to talk about my diabetes which I hadn't ever done before and have learned so much from reading how others manage their blood sugar.

Hell @Lill welcome to the forum.🙂 Like @SB2015 I too was rushed into hospital with Ketoacidosis and diagnosed with T1. HbA1c was 156 but managed to get it down to 48 in 3 months, now a steady 38/39 thanks to this forum. Please read as much as you can and if you see a question you can answer go for it.😎

Welcome to the forum Lill, sorry to hear you have advanced to type 1.
