Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello,

I’ve just been diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic through a blood test which showed 92 mmol and it’s been quite a shock.

Over the last week I have cut out all soft drinks, pasta, noodles, chocolate, bread, cereal... eating more fruit, fish, chicken, salad... I do feel better and have been out walking more, but find I am struggling a little with my energy levels and digestion (especially in the evening - sometimes so bad I thought it was something much more serious, but it also seemed to be associated with low energy, so who knows).

I am also very scared about what the future holds as I am only 35 and my family has a history of heart attacks. I am seeing the diabetics nurse in 2 weeks.

Any help on what to ask or any similar experiences are appreciated.

Hi Laura, welcome. We have all been where you are right now, it does get easier as your body adjusts to the new way of eating. Are you on any medication? Also, some fruit has a high sugar content, especially tropical fruits, are you testing your blood before and after eating to see how your body is reacting?

Hi Laura and welcome to the forum. I too had a high reading of 90 in January and like you was shocked to the core. I think we have all experienced that shock and it does take a while to get your head around it, however you do simply because you have to. Sounds like you are doing lots of sensible things with your diet but can I point out that fruit is also high in carbs. The best ones to have are strawberries and raspberries, I limit myself to a maximum of 2 pieces a day and we are all different with what our bodies can tolerate. This goes for all foods and a good majority of us have testing kits to check what foods particularly don’t like us, my worst one is pasta. I don’t want to fill your head wi5h too much stuff as it is very early days, you will get more info when you see your DN and we are always hear to help, listen and support so don’t hesitate to keep posting. You have done the best thing by changing some of your foods and most of all by joining this site.

Thanks Sue, Cathy.

I don’t have a testing kit yet, but have ordered one after advice I read here. Edit - I am not on any other medication.

I will bear that in mind about the strawberries - I mostly eat raspberries, strawberries and cherries. So hopefully that is good, but obviously need to watch the carbs. It’s difficult to know what is good and in what combinations.

Each time you think of something you don’t know write it down, ask all these questions when you see the DN, if you don’t get an answer or one you are querying then please ask us. We are not clinical but there are loads of people with lots of experience. You are obviously concerned about your family history so put this one at the top, you will certainly be helping yourself by changing your diet and doing exercise and if you need to lose some weight these things will help and together all these things will help you keep your heart healthy. Keep posting Laura and take care x

Eating Med Diet? Grains? Poorly informed dieticians/docs spouting nonsense. In Italy they traditionally cook with goose fat, lard or butter depending on the region; in Greece they eat high sat-fat feta cheese daily; in Spain and Portugal they consume huge amounts of fatty beef and pork, and plenty of eggs; in France they cook with butter and cream, and eat much full fat cheese. (There is no French paradox that states that because the French drink red wine, high in resveratrol, they have little heart disease, because dietary cholesterol does NOT cause higher blood cholesterol NOR arterial narrowing in the first place).

Grains. The Food Pyramid is heavily biased towards starches and heavily against FAT and meat. Hence, the current crisis we are in. The Food Pyramid was published in the Public School science books about the same time GMO's were made legal for human consumption!! Yet

All grains are high in lectin plant phenols, chemicals that desensitize cell membranes to insulin, causing insulin over production. Grains are also high in leptin plant hormones that interrupt signaling between the liver and pancreas, causing insulin disruptions. These 2 cause obesity and diabetes2.

Wheat and most other grains raise blood sugar. A slice of organic whole wheat bread raises blood sugar more than a candy bar.

Grains are high in carbs that fatten. Digested carbs 1st top-up muscle and liver glycogen, stored sugar. The rest is rapidly converted to bodyfat in the cells' mitochondria via the Krebs cycle. Digested fat only slowly converts to useable energy molecules in the liver. Grains raise artery-calcifying tri-glycerides, are high in phytates that block calcium and iron absorption. White flour has residual chlorine from bleaching that depletes immune-boosting body-stores of selenium.

Grain's Celiac disease, leaky gut, has over 300 symptoms, you won't know you have it! Some of the symptoms are abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, and diarrhea every time you eat bread, rice, or pastries. Then you would have wheat or gluten intolerance, as do 60-70% of the population.
