Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I've just joined the group as i was told that I have Type 2 diabetes on 24 May 2019 and was given the following advice - you can have a Rich Tea Biscuit, drink wine and don't put cream on your toes. That was the last time I saw that Nurse! At that time my A1c was 48 and she kept on are you having Metformin then until I caved in and agreed. The doctor told her to tell me I had to go back 2 weeks later and saw a different nurse who said I didn't need to take Metformin. The result is that I aren't taking any notice of what the NHS say because, looking at this forum I have more chance of getting good advice from all of you..

Hello Birdie and welcome to the forum. Hmm not great advice from that first DN, unfortunately I’m not surprised. No no to the biscuit, ok to the wine in moderation though red is better than white and yes correct in not putting cream between the toes. Certainly at 48 which is just on the border for diabetes I am again surprised at you being given Metformin, I would have thought by adjusting your diet and if possible some exercise should help you a lot to keep your bg levels low. I’m not sure how many posts you have looked at but certainly lowering your carb intake esp things like bread, pasta, rice and potatoes will help keep them low. If you have any questions please feel free to ask, in fact anything at all, we are all here to help you

Hi Bridie, welcome to the forum. At a reading of 48 you are just teetering on the edge, so with a bit of tweaking you should be able to get control very quickly, so I really don't think you need Metformin at this stage!

Reducing or cutting down on starchy carbs - bread, pasta, rice, potatoes - will help. Lots of green leafy veg, good quality meat, fish, eggs, are all good. Losing a bit of weight if you need to, and doing some regular exercise will help too. Rich Tea biscuits are probably better than most others (I leave biccies alone, otherwise I'd stuff the whole packet), and you may be pleased to know that red wine is fine. Soft fruit like raspberries, strawberries and so on are generally ok but other fruits can spike your blood glucose. In the end we are all different in what foods affect us, which is why most of us here test with a blood glucose meter.

Ask any questions you like, we aim to please!

At only just diabetic you might get away with a single biscuit - but far better (I think) to really give your diet a going over and swap some lower carb veges for the high carb ones, cut back on bread, rice, pasta, oats and other grains - even make a serving of peas a small one, have salad, stir fry, avoid breadcrumb or batter coating - it always makes me smile when I see the 100 percent whatever on a package and it means the tiny good bit in the middle of all the stodge.
It might be a good investment to send off for a meter to test your glucose levels after meals to see how well you are doing keeping your levels down.

Hi & welcome 🙂
I can only endorse what the others have already said, going low carb will certainly put you back on track. It’s a pain to start with but once you get your head around it, it’s actually quite easy and the results are quick! Ask any questions you might have and you will find you get all the support and advice you need :D

Welcome to the forum.
My partner was diagnosed in June this year Type2. His A1c was also 48. All the DB told him was lower his carbs, and exercise, that was it.
Since then I have been sticking to a rigid diet. He has lost weight, but does not need to lose any more. I have made an appt to see DB in 2 weeks time, otherwise it would be October before we saw her again. I am going to ask her to refer him to a dietician at the hospital. I will be asking her a lot of questions.
The guys on here since I joined 3 weeks ago have been so helpful.

Just to let you know, I have changed GPs and met with a nurse who said I needed blood tests including HbA1c - so, in 3 months less 1 week my A1c has gone down from 48 to 45 - it's back to prediabetes level and next A1c is in 6 months time.

Well done Bridie that is excellent news and if you keep tweaking your diet you should hopefully stay in that range, thanks for letting us know and stay in touch x

Welcome to the forum Birdie you will find plenty of friends and good advice here. The unfortunate feature of doctors and nurses is they often contradict, that's why I don't like dealing with different doctors or dentist. Take care of yourself.
