Type 2
I was told yesterday I have type 2 diabetes, with blood sugar of 70. Put straight on Metformin 4x a day. They also did an ultrasound of my feet!

Can anyone recommend a good place for advice on food & what to eat?

Welcome JasonN. Look no further than the Food/carbs queries and recipes forum on this website.

Hi Jason and welcome. Diagnosis is a shock isn’t it. You will get lots of help here. Look around the posts and you will get a good idea of what people are doing and then ask lots of questions. Very simply put you need to reduce your carbs, bread, pasta, rice and potatoes etc and of course all obvious sugars. It can seem hard but it’s fairly easy to pick up, depends on what sort of a diet you are used to. Keep in touch x

Welcome Jason I am only four months in to being a diabetic, this is a great site with some very nice helpful people on it.

Welcome Jason, all you need to know is here so best advice I can give is go make a cuppa, get comfy and explore the back posts! Diabetes has changed my life completely, but all for the better! I’m eating better, sleeping better and over 4 stone lighter after little over a year down the line! I also live with heart disease and even that has improved thanks to my lifestyle changes :D It takes awhile to adjust but honestly it is SO worth it 😉 I also started with a high BG, more than double yours, I have gone from 4 x metformin to being diet controlled, if I can do it then you can too!

Welcome to the site.

Great advice on here, as well as recipes and threads showing what others eat. I find that helpful as I’m not very imaginative!

Hope you’re feeling ok about the diagnosis it’s not easy but keep in touch on here and when you’re having a bad day reach out

Hi @JasonN this is a great site,I had my diagnosis over the phone about 3 weeks ago so haven't got my bloods yet, that will be next week,I have cut down massively on carbs, stopped eating bread and potatoes, rice, pasta, crips biscuits, pastries, and have been reading labels for the amount of carbs contained within,I have lost a lot of weight in a short period,I hope things go well,I eat plenty of chicken and vegetables, also tuna salads and other fish (without batter or breadcrumb),I don't have cereals now due to the carbs and instead have Greek yoghurt in the morning with a handful of walnuts or almonds,I also have eggs, scrambled and poached often with spinach, the fats provide me with fuel as I have ditched the carbs which beforehand would have been my fuel for the day,but those carbs that I mentioned the body turns them in to glucose which elevates blood sugar levels.
I feel a lot better after changing my diet and even a couple of weeks in I feel it's not the end of the world not to eat chips and bread

Hi @JasonN welcome to the forum,🙂 your feet need to be checked every day and a good moisturiser applied all over except in between the toes. As far as food is concerned I`m afraid we are all individual, what suits one may not suit another but as @CathyB and @SueEK says reducing the amount of carbs will certainly help. Ask your Doctor if you can have a meter for testing your blood sugars but don`t get your hope up, Its the only way you will know what foods affect you. Read as much on the forum as you can without becoming overwhelmed and ask any question you wish too, we look forward to hearing how you are progressing.

Hi Jason and welcome.

Diagnosis can seem so overwhelming to begin with can’t it? You’re in the right place for support and advice here though.
