Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I'm Gill and have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabletes. There is so much really good info here. I was amazed. I have yet to see the diabetic nurse but go on Friday and then I will find out how bad I am but at diagnosis they said I was at the low end with a score of 51. I had no idea what that score represents until I started reading the other posts. Looks like I aren't mega diabetic and if I sort out my eating and move more and keep reading this site I will be ok.

Hi WB (*not* going to call you Whingebag!). Yr 51 is what's known as an "HbA1c", which gives an estimate of what your blood glucose has been like over the last few months. Check the top line on this useful pic:

You're down in the nice greenish zones - you caught it early! You'll probably be given a target of getting it down below 48, which should be a doddle.

Main point is that there's no need to get anxious: at 51 there's probably only very tiny risk of diabetes-related complications, and you have plenty of time to process the upcoming information deluge which you now face.

Chances are that some simple lifestyle changes will be enough - you won't have to run up & down mountains and survive on weeds & water, unless you want to 🙂 Maybe the best attitude is to treat the diagnosis as a spur to getting healthier - chances are you'll end up healthier than ever.

Try to get as much info out of yr DN as you can & don't hesitate to ask whatever questions here & elsewhere. Everybody's been through the same process & recalls the confusion of their early days. All the best!

Thanks so much I feel very positive 🙂 Obviously was a bit anxious and glad I found this site. I think this experience with diabetes will deffo improve my life, as wierd as that sounds.

Hello and welcome.
As your Hba1c score is not all that much above prediabetic, you might find that you can soon reverse the problem.
First I'd advise that you tot up the amounts of carbs, starches and sugars, you eat over a week, and then half them over a period of a few weeks - replace any low fat options with those with the normal natural fat, eat low carb foods to replace the bread, rice, cereals, potatoes and sugary fruit, and with any luck you should soon be back to normal - if not then further swaps or reductions should solve it. Don't replace white with brown or wholemeal - some people do say it works, but I can digest them just the same - if you want to get a testing meter you can see if you can cope with 'healthy options' once you have normal readings most of the time.
I am really sensitive to carbs and needed to stick to less than 50 gm a day to get down to normal, but I started off at 91 so a lot higher than you at diagnosis.

Thank you for the advice 🙂 i,ll let you know how i get on.
Friday 10/05/19 Just got back from the nurse. She has said that before confirming diabetes type 2 I need to stick to a diet much like the one I am eating now except I need to eat more carbs.
In 8 weeks time they will test my blood again and decide what medication (if any) I will need. She did not want me to do any regular testing and I am now thinking that when the doctor said that I was diabetic she should have said pre diabetic.
As I am still over 21 stone it wont do me any harm to follow the eating tips as that weight is not condusive to good health in any one, diabetes diagnosis or not. Feeling really positive 🙂
