Hi everyone.

Im Rachael. I have been diabetic since i was 8. i am now 21.

Just joined this really to speak to people about diabetes. Dont really know anybody else that has it and I feel it nice to see what other people have to say sometimes and hopefully give me advice if i need it.

Just about to start carb counting after it being suggested to me by my doctors several times. I know my control could be better, so hopefully i will see improvements in my bloods :D.

Hi Rachael, welcome to the forum🙂 We have members here who are in exactly the same position as you, so you will be able to share your experiences (we have another member who is 21 and diagnosed aged 8, and she's recently started carb-counting!). Plus, there are lots of experienced people who will be able to help you along if you get stuck with anything.

What insulin regime are you on? Has your doctor booked you on a carb-counting course? DAFNE is a popular course, although some PCTs do their own versions.

Feel free to jump in any time, we're a friendly bunch!🙂

Hi Heidi & Northerner

Oh right. I have lantus & novorapid insulin. No i have not been booked on any courses to do with carb counting. I have seen the dietian at the hospital i am under a few times about carb counting but to be honest i didn't think it was much use as it seemed she seemed to be guessing a lot and saying what if.

The last few weeks i have done a lot of my own research on carb counting using the net, and info booklets/leaflets i got from the hospital. so most of the stuff i know about carb counting is self taught. I have another appointment with the dietian in May, so hopefully now i have a better understanding of it, i will get more out of the appointment.

Have you tried the BDEC (Bournemouth Diabetes and Endocrine Centre) online carb counting course? It's highly recommended 🙂 You have to register (free) then you have 2 years to complete the course:

Yeah i have been on that site. that's where i have got most of my infomation from about carb counting. Not sure i have seen on there bout the 2 year course thing but i have found it very useful.

This afternoon spent some time looking up my favourite/ often eating foods and finding out how many carbs in etc. all starting to make more sense.

Hi Rachael, welcome to the forum.

Hey LilRach,

Welcome to the madhouse, erm I mean forum and extended family that we have here on the boards. I've had type one about the same lenght of time as you have.

Good to see you've started carb counting. I was taught to do that over the summer or last year and I wouldn't look back at all. As a result I've not got a pump and I'm working on bringing my HbA1C down by hook or by crook. If you've got any queries about carb counting I'd ask Adrienne, she's something of an expert on the matter. It really will help you so much when you get it right.

Remember, there's nothing silly that you can ask. We'll always pitch in with an answer if we can!

Tom
