Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I'll try to keep to the short version- Was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during pregnancy. My daughter had got very big and ended up being born 4 weeks early by c-section. My BG were very high and couldn't get them under control despite starting insulin as soon as it was discovered. Anyway, my daughter is now fine after a short spell in special care. Doctors realized i actually had Type 1 after the birth. That was the end of last year and have been trying to get used to not only being a mother but a diabetic as well. I'm carb counting with lantus/humalog. So far it has been ok but feel that there's so much more to learn. Have been reading all the posts for a few weeks ,and have found them very helpful, so thought i would join up.

Hi and welcome to the forum carrie , sorry to hear about your lilun being born early but glad things are ok now, we have some new mummies on here and some ladies who are pregnant at the moment so as well as the rest of us you will have things in common with them.

How has your care been?

My care during pregnancy was terrible- hence not being diagnosed till 32 weeks but my diabetic care has been excellent and my doctor and DSN are wonderful - so supportive.

Shocking to hear you were looked after so poorly espiecially when your pregnant thats one of the most important times you need good care and support.I'm pleased to hear your care has improved throughout your diabetes though thats always half the battle knowing you have a good care team behind you really helps.

Hi Carrie - welcome to the forum.

I remember at my DAFNE course there was someone in the same situation as you. They thought she had GD during pregnancy but it turned out to be type 1.

Glad to hear your daughter is doing well - how old is she now?

thanks for the welcome. All my friends and family have been very supportive but i'm finding it a little frustrating that they don't really understand what how difficult this is.there are a lot of people who are clueless about diabetes. I've even had a few people tell me 'it might clear up!!!!!!!!' - I wish. Its nice to have people who understand.

rachelha- she's 4 months and makes it all worth while. When i get a bit down about things i always remind myself how lucky i am to have her. In some ways its good to have another focus.

Carrie - I am currently 16 weeks pregnant, and really craving proper coffee and a very large scone not the apple I just had. I keep trying to remember how good it will feel to produce a healthy baby, and to stay focussed on staying healthy but it is hard.

rachelha- Congratulations! It was really difficult to be good. I had always thought pregnancy was a great excuse to eat rubbish. It was a real worry towards the end since my BG had been very high for a while- the problem was that i was very tired/thirsty/running to the bathroom but put it all down to normal pregnancy. symptoms. I even ended up in hospital for 5 days with 'serious dehydration and a headache'- was told at the time it was hormonal (despite +++ keytones!) and sent home with paracetamol but my doctor now thinks it was DKA. (Sorry starting to rant- am still very annoyed about the poor care) Anyway, my daughter is absolutely fine after all that so try not to worry too much. It it your first?

Carrie - I cant believe they put those symptoms down to hormones, that is absolutely ridiculous, no wonder you were/are angry. You must have felt awful with that on top of the normal pregnancy worries and symptoms.

I am glad you care has improved now. What insulin regime are you on?

rachelha- i'm on lantus/humalog which seems to suit me so far but have been told i'm still honeymooning so i know its a bit easier to control at the moment. What are you on? How are you feeling so far?

Welcome to the forum. Your diagnosis sounds quite frightening. I've had diabetes for 2 years now and I have a 2 month old I don't think i would have been able to cope with diabetes straight after having her it's hard enough now and I vaguely know what I'm doing 🙄 Glad to hear your dsn are supportive and helpful. There's always someone about to ask any questions you might have or need a rant or moan about diabetes and there's quite a few new mum's on here too x
