Just newly diagnosed last week and started on Glimeperide 1mg until I see the specialist at my surgery tomorrow. Not sure what type I am yet, awaiting the results of a GAD test. My mum and grandad both have/had type 2 but I'm currently on treatment for Melanoma having already had immunotherapy so they think it could be related to that.
Didn't have many symptoms other than thirst, drinking a lot and tired all the time but as this is a known side effect of my treatment didn't suspect anything else wrong. GP called me a "special case" lol!
Have made some changes to my diet already but didn't realise how many so called healthy foods are full of carbs, like my daily glass of cranberry juice.
GP told me to check blood sugar before driving but have been doing random tests too.
I may have some questions once I get my round it.
Look forward to chatting 🙂

Welcome to the forum, there's plenty of helpful people on here.

Hello Chrissiem and a warm welcome to our supportive forum. Sorry to read you've been dx (Diagnosed) but glad you found us ~ there is a wealth of knowledge and experience here so feel free to ask as many questions as you wish and as many times that you want ~ no question is silly by the way. Diabetes is a manageable condition if you reduce your carborhydrate intake and exercise.

Good to see you've made some changes to your diet. Amazon sell a book which I can highly recommend. CARB & CALORIE COUNTER £10.49. Photo attached. It's the perfect support tool for carb counting in diabetes ~ weight management ~ portion control ~ and general healthy eating.

The first year by Gretchen Becker is an excellent book to read. She herself is Type2 and everything you read is about her experience as a newly diagnosed diabetic + more. It will give you a better understanding of diabetes. Available on Amazon.
Do please stay in touch and update us following your appointment with your GP.
Take care x

Thank you, I will have a look for it.

Saw the diabetic specialist GP this morning and left not really knowing any more than I did before. She is going to repeat my bloods in a couple of weeks and seeing me again in a month. Just got to keep on doing what I'm trying to do. The results of my GAD test have yet to appear, so she can't say anymore at the moment. Have to check and records my sugar levels morning and night on addition to the driving ones.

Trying now to find ways of modifying recipes/meals to reduce the carbs, especially as I'm not a big vegetable lover. Big learning curve I think :(

Hi Chrissiem & welcome to the forum. Not being a big veggie lover isn't a big issue when it comes to blood sugar control. Things like cheese, meat & fish are very low carb and are fine. Some veg are best avoided or at least reduced, such as potatoes & starchy veg that grows underground. The best veg is the green & leafy kind.
