Type 2
hi all

my name is lisa and I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about a week and a half ago, I have just had a brief look through some other posts on here and was surprised by one lady's diagnosis as my nurse told me a HbA1c of 50 is what they would expect though ideally it should be below 40, anyway mine was 124!
I have felt fairly supported by the nurse though she can be very abrupt and quite upset me in first meeting but it shook me into making some much needed changes, I have also done the little e-learning course here which I found very helpful

but I now have a new issue and I cant get hold of anyone with it being Saturday I really should have thought to phone yesterday but I didn't, basically I have problems with my vision I cant focus on anything close up or read a book, now my opticians told me uncontrolled blood sugar can affect your prescription and I'm hoping that's all it is as obviously my blood sugars are yet to be controlled, does anyone have any experience of this? I am very worried about my vision, I also have anxiety and depression so I am constantly worrying about this

anyway sorry for the long post and I look forward to hearing from people

Lisa

Hi Lisa, welcome to the forum 🙂 Don't worry - the blurry vision thing affects a lot of people either before or shrotly after diagnosis, me included! It will improve over the next week or two as you blood sugar levels are brought under better control and your eyes adjust. The optician is correct, the high levels cause a distortion in the shape of the lens of the eye and this can cause blurred vision as the levels of glucose change and adjust. You will be fine 🙂 In the meantime, I'd suggest picking up some cheap reading glasses - don't buy anything expensive as your vision will have changed again in a week or two - £2-£3 should tide you over 🙂

Hi Welcome. Just letting you know it's happened to me too. It took 3-4 weeks for my eyes to recover.
Enlarge your screen if necessary and as @Northerner said don't get buying expensive glasses a cheap reading pair should suffice till your vision settl s right down.

Ask as many questions as you needy ok.

thanks both
that's very reassuring, just been looking for reading glasses now though now I'm confused as to what strength to get, I figure the strongest ones?
unfortunately I don't get out much so popping to the pound shop for some is out of the question and they aren't that cheap elsewhere! but thanks at least I have hope of being able to read my book or do some stitching with new glasses

I'm afraid the strength is very much trial and error. It's a shame your not able to try some on before you buy as that is really the only way to find out what strength is best for you. If your vision is really blurry perhaps the strongest ones will help.
Fingers crossed they will help enough that you can do some reading and stitching.

well I have ordered the second to strongest so hopefully they will help its driving me mad not to be able to read!
another question if I may (I'm sure I will have lots before I'm through) do you know roughly how long it will take my blood glucose levels to settle, I had thought as I cut out all sugary treats and chocolate that it would have come down much more than it actually had. I wish I could measure it but my nurse was very against me doing that but having read opinions on here I might tackle her again on the matter as I am a control freak anyway and not knowing what's going on is pretty hard on me

Welcome to the Forum Purgatory. I thought as I ate a lot of fruit and the GP told me to cut down that that was all there was to it when I was diagnosed pre-diabetic last year until I came on here. It is not just sugary treats and chocolate but you have to watch bread, potatoes, pasta, rice and anything starchy and with lots of carbs in it.

If you fund the testing machine and strips yourself they cannot really stop you from testing. I have now started it as I feel I need to know what I can and cannot eat as I may be cutting things out unnecessarily. For example, some people here can eat porridge, others cannot. I can. Some can eat bread, others cannot. I can eat Burgen soya and linseed but do not touch white bread. I had a horrendous jump a couple of weeks ago from 5.9 to 12.4 after a mixed grill. When I tried all the other foods individually nothing spiked and the only food I had not re-tested was the sausage so I had to assume it was that. Now lots of people here can tolerate sausage.
