Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
After a few weeks of loitering and eavesdropping on you all, I thought I should join and say hello!

I was diagnosed type 1 in 1978 when I was 11. As others have mentioned, it was the days of glass syringes, reusable needles (not great after a few uses) and surgical spirit- let's skip over the testing with test tubes and fizzy tablets! Oh and "Tab" sugar free cola.

Still learning new things, even after all this time. Thanks to this forum I've got myself a Freestyle Libre - so addictive!

Hi Lisa, welcome to the forum 🙂 Glad you decided to join up, we can always do with people who have a long and varied experience, and you'll find you are not alone in remembering those glass syringes and panel pins 🙂 Thankfully, things have progressed and are getting better all the time - the Libre is a great example. How have things been for you over the years? I don't think you ever stop learning, but it's good to hear the experiences of others who can relate to all the ups and downs 🙂

I was also diagnosed in 1978 aged 12 so the same length of service. It does make me smile looking back at the equipment we used then although it really didn't amuse me at the time trying to be a rebellious teenager with my very own urine testing kit!

I'd forgotten about Tab cola! I think Diet Coke eventually replaced it. I can remember Energen One Cal cola in a bottle coated in a kind of polystyrene jacket. I could only find sugar free drinks in the chemists back then.

Thank you. I seem to have toddled along mostly ok, so far. I think I've been pretty lucky. I've had the usual ups and downs that everyone else has, puzzling and frustrating results etc and a few hours in A&E last year with ketones. I had an issue with human insulin when that first arrived, hypos from nowhere! Things certainly have progressed. I don't think that 11 yr old girl would have imagined anything like a Libre!

I'm without a sensor at the moment. Had to send my latest (only my third) back yesterday as it was faulty. Yet today I feel lost without it and am still walking through doorways very carefully...trying not to knock something that isn't even there!

I can't work out if it feels like a long time ago or not, but the equipment and regimes certainly do! I guess it was all pretty high tech at the time. I'd forgotten all about Energen one cal and buying drinks from the chemist....now I feel old!

Yes I'm well known on here for my problems with doorways jumping out at my arm. :D
Do you know about the Libre group on Facebook , on the pinned post there they give a code each month for free postage
